My Publishing Journey- #LifeBooksWriting – Author Blog Challenge

This week’s Author Blog Challenge is ‘My Publishing Journey’. I’m a writer. I like words, so I looked up the definitions of  journey and a couple of them really resonated with me.

Publishing Journey 1

This is so true of my publishing journey. Firstly  I was in my early fifties when my first book was published. I’d enjoyed writing since I was in my late teens but my writing journey stopped and started so many times. Some would say I just wasn’t dedicated  enough and that’s true. Writing is a guilty pleasure for me. Something that’s profoundly personal. I’m not good at putting myself at the top of the list, there are so many other people  that I consider more important. Looking after my family and earning a living were my focus for many years and writing was something I did when I could find a few minutes.

Secondly, even though I now have three books published, I know I am only at the beginning of my journey and I just hope I have enough years left to establish myself in the writing world. I have no illusions of best seller success but I do want to write books lots of people like reading.

Publishing Journey 2

I am a novice writer I still have so much to learn. I have recently been told by a couple of publishers that I have a’real’ talent as  a writer but that I need to work on my grammar and punctuation.  This has always been a blind spot for me and one that I wonder if I can master this late in life but who knows?

Publishing Journey 3.jpg

My publishing journey has been a learning experience, after the initial euphoria of becoming a published author , I realised the work was just beginning.  Can you write another book? Is it as good or better than the first one? Can you make your potential readers love your books as much as you do?

My publishing journey to date is relatively short.  The Dragon Legacy, my first book published December 2013. The Dangerous Gift, my third book published February 2016. Book number 4 Past Shadows  is yet to be published. I have been asked to revise and resubmit by one publisher so I may do  that. Whatever happens you’ll be the first to know.

The Dangerous Gift: Writing Journey Update – Jane Hunt

the dangerous gift

So as promised in my Thursday post about The Revenge Masquerade This weekend I’m blogging about my next project. The Dangerous Gift. Regular followers of my blog will recall  I started this book last year and entered the first chapter in the SYTYCW 2013.

I fully intended to finish it but after completing and editing the first half  I started a different book ”Past Shadows for NaNoWriMo in November. In December I was swept into the whirlwind of The Dragon Legacy’s publication and all the associated promotion. When I found time to write again in January I decided to go with ‘The Revenge Masquerade’ – Jasmine and Zane’s story and The Dangerous Gift was put on hold.

Now May is drawing to a close I decided to read through what I’d written of The Dangerous Gift and I was surprised how well it read.  Even though I knew what was going to happen I still wanted to turn the pages to find out if I was right. So I’ve taken this as a sign to concentrate on finishing my romantic suspense and see what its like when I finished it. 🙂

If you like to know more about ‘The  Dangerous Gift’ check out my Pinterest board ‘The Dangerous Gift’ and The Dangerous Gift page here on my website. I’ll post a snippet of what I’ve written so far in my Sunday Snippet post  later.

Jasmine and Zane’s Story – Update and Excerpt

I’ve been writing Jasmine and Zane’s story for a few weeks now and whilst I still have some way to go I wanted to share an extract from the first chapter.

Love to know what you think.

Excerpt
”Run Zane. Warn Lukas. I got this.”

He couldn’t risk replying. Shifting back to his wolf would make him faster but the city streets were full of chattering voices as people hurried to work. He must keep his wolf identity secret from the human world. He backed out of the room with reluctant steps not wanting to leave Lukas’s sister in danger but her message repeated itself in his head, a litany he couldn’t ignore. He must find Lukas. As he crossed the landing and ran down the stairs he considered the best method of communication with the dragon lord; unsure of Lukas’ current whereabouts since he last saw him in the Italian Dolomites.

Outside the sun had climbed higher in the sky, the previous deserted streets now teemed with humanity, fortunately all preoccupied with their own thoughts. It was still a little early for the tourists who sauntered at a more leisurely pace. He walked towards the canal. Using the water as a communication medium would be the quickest way to reach Lukas’ dragon. He walked briskly, his long legs eating up the short distance between the palazzo and the water. As he turned into the square he sensed someone close by. He scanned the crowd, no one seemed interested in him but a supernatural wouldn’t be overt. He looked over his shoulder the titan hair betrayed her, Jasmine.

Zane attributed the multitude of butterflies in his abdomen and his quickening heartbeat to Adrenaline produced by his need for flight rather than sexual excitement at seeing his witchy lover. No time to find out why she was here the demon could be in pursuit. To acknowledge Jasmine’s presence would put her on the demon’s radar. First contact Lukas. No distractions. His hair fell over his eyes as he shook his head to clear Jasmine’s image and the memories it evoked from his mind. She couldn’t be real just another illusion from his fevered imagination. Jasmine dominated his torrid dreams as he relived their passion on a nightly basis. Despite his resolve the timing of her appearance disturbed him. Perhaps the demon picked her out of his subconscious and taunted him? The other explanation bothered him more. If Jasmine sensed the danger he faced she would reach out to him telepathically. Given Jasmine’s clairvoyance and empathy it would explain her appearance. He cleared his mind. Whilst her presence was poignant and worthy of investigation time was short it would have to wait.

The shimmering water dazzled him. This would only work if he became the wolf; the risk of drowning much greater in human form. He searched for a quieter spot away from the waiting gondolas and their ever-present gondoliers. Flies buzzed around the bags of rubbish awaiting collection behind one of the numerous alfresco cafes. There between the bins was the only place. He dived behind them gagging at the odour of rancid food and the scattering of rodents who sensed a predator in their midst. He tore off his clothes mindful of his need to redress later when he regained his human form. He embraced the pain of muscles stretching beyond their human endurance, bones cracked and reformed as he shifted into his true form. The silver wolf sniffed the air, no human scent in the immediate vicinity. He crept from his smelly hiding place and ran towards the water. A sharp gasp curtailed his dive into the water. His gaze locked with Jasmine’s watery, emerald stare. Her hand reached out to him he hesitated but before he acknowledged her his hackles rose as he sensed danger close by, somewhere behind Jasmine. He must go. If he lingered he risked himself and Jasmine who would be collateral damage in the demon’s pursuit. He dived into the dark, still waters of the canal with Jasmine’s screams ringing in his ears.’

A Walk in the Meadow on a Summer’s Day

2013-06-15 09.49.48

Summer  has taken such a long time to reach us this year, nature seems to be playing a constant game of catch up. I’ve been waiting patiently for my oriental poppy to flower, finally on Saturday it did. 🙂 Now the sun has arrived the wild flowers are abundant in the countryside around my home. I took a walk with my daughter and our dog Jazz this lunchtime  to give us both a break from our computers and here are a few of the flowers we saw on the way. 🙂

The Marsh Orchids which are pictured grow in the country park close to our home.  I always escape to the country park and trails when I want inspiration or just need to work through an issue with a plot or character. Walking through meadows of wild flowers always makes me think of  the supernatural especially Fae.

We found the enchanted wood below near Curbar in the Peak District Derbyshire last Sunday.

This water filled rock was found high up on Baslow edge. I couldn’t help but wonder what mystical worlds it concealed.

Finally an inquisitive visitor I had whilst writing this post. This friendly bird visits us several times a day. 🙂
