Valentine’s Day – Commercialism versus Romance

Happy Valentine's Day 2
So do you see February 14th as the most romantic day of the year or just commercialism at its worst?

For many businesses, notably confectioners, florists, lingerie shops and restaurants, it can be one of the most profitable days of the year.

Valentine

As a romance writer you would expect me to be a staunch supporter of Valentine’s day and in many ways I am. I love that couples go out on date nights and lovers make an effort to surprise their partners with a gift but neither of these things have to cost a fortune. Most people truly in love would find a handmade gift or a home cooked supper the most romantic gift of all.

What I dislike about Valentine’s day is the hype, the insistence by the commercial world that if you don’t spend a fortune, your Valentine’s gift it isn’t worth anything.

Well take it from someone who has been married for almost 32 years the money doesn’t matter it’s the thought that counts.

So be a true romantic this year and ignore the pressure from advertisers. Give your loved one your time, help with the chores, so you can enjoy more ‘us’ time  and have a delicious home cooked Valentine treat à deux.

5* Review: Be My Valentine – Nikki Moore, Teresa Morgan, Brigid Coady

The last in my out of season reviews takes us to Valentine’s Day and a lovely collection of romantic short stories which I really enjoyed.

My ReviewBe My Valentine

Be My Valentine’ is a wonderful collection of romantic shorts with memorable characters and emotion rich plots. I enjoyed all five which are quick, easy reads’ that leave a lasting impression. I usually find short stories leave me up in the air with more questions than answers but these all reach a satisfying conclusion.

Stories one and five are beautifully poignant and brought a tear to my eye.

Here’s what I thought of each story:

The Love Letter: Poignant, vivid setting with a surprising twist.
A Day in the Life: A tale of courage and hope for the future.
Love Will Find You: Sweet romance in a realistic setting.
Storm in a Coffee Cup: Fun and sweetly romantic.
Half a Heart: Realistic and emotional.

Be My Valentine gives you romance with realism and a proper ending.

I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Valentine’s Day In the Italian Lakes – The Dragon Legacy #2 A Date With Jasmine and Zane –

So its Valentine’s Day and I am spending it writing more of my next book in The Dragon Legacy Jasmine and Zane’s adventure now loosely titled ‘The Revenge Masquerade’. For regular readers of this blog you will know my new story is set in Italy predominately the Italian lakes which I have visited and Venice which I haven’t.

To give myself a break I thought about what Jasmine and Zane could do on a romantic Valentine’s Date in Lake Garda my favourite of the lakes. There is so much going on. Here are a few things they might try 🙂

Kitesurfing on Lake Garda looks fun as this Kitesurfing school video shows:

Then perhaps a little sightseeing around one of the beautiful towns around Lake Garda. Which one would you choose?

Finally a romantic meal in Garda at the edge of the lake at one of the many lakeside restaurants and watch the sunset over the lake perfetto.

Happy Valentine’s Day 🙂
