 EXCERPT

‘Killian stepped forward, forcing her to tilt her head back to look up at him. He still seemed so big to her. He still overwhelmed her. But he didn’t frighten her anymore.

“You look tired.” She fought the urge to lift her hand to touch his gorgeous face.

“I am,” he said, the corner of his lips turning up in a half smile.

 “Oh.”

He stared down at her, his half smile slipping. A dizzying parade of emotions swirled through his eyes. She couldn’t read them all, but she understood enough. He felt as torn as she did.

“Will I remember you three years from now?” she whispered, her heart aching with the fear that she would forget him as she had so much else…and with fear that she would remember him. That she would survive this nightmare and he would haunt her for the rest of her days like so much else did.

“Do you want to remember me?” He took another step in her direction.

“I don’t know.” She frowned, confused. “You make me feel like maybe the world isn’t so bad. Like maybe I’m safe with you. I don’t think I want to forget that.”

Killian tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and cupped her cheek gently in one big hand. “You are safe with me. I won’t let anyone hurt you, Aubrey.”

She stared at him for a long, silent moment. He’d promised before that he wouldn’t hurt her, but even then an unspoken fear had stood between them like a wall. A little voice whispered that if she got too close, he would hurt her as badly as the things in her past hurt. That voice had stopped whispering when he’d kissed her today, and wasn’t that odd?

 “You hurt me today.”

He bowed his head, letting his hand fall away from her face. “I’m sorry.”

Her heart ached a little at the agonized way he said it. As if it shamed him to know he’d hurt her. As if, maybe, he cared more than he should too.

“Why did you?” she asked, not accusing, but curious. She wanted to understand him. No, sheneeded to understand him on some level she couldn’t even explain to herself. “You wanted me, didn’t you?”

His gaze sought hers, honesty shining from his angel-bright eyes. “More than you know.”

Aubrey took a deep breath, letting her lungs fill with air even as her heart filled with his confession. And just as quickly, the buoyant feeling vanished. “It doesn’t change anything, though, does it?” she whispered.

 “Do you want it to?”

She hesitated for a long moment, unsure. And then her shoulders slumped, the breath she’d taken expelling in a long sigh. “I’m sorry.”

Killian gave her a sad smile and reached for her again. He swept a finger beneath her eye, collecting the teardrop she hadn’t even realized had fallen. “No apologies,” he whispered, bringing his finger to his mouth. He stuck out the tip of his tongue and lapped that single bead of moisture from his fingertip. “You owe me nothing.”

If that was true, why did she feel like crying?’

Paranormal My Review

Reap & Repent (The Reaper Series Book 1)‘Reap and Repent’ is the exciting first book, in a series that promises to be amazing. Originality, research and powerful, vivid characters define this story, which is a curious mix of imagination and clever use of well known religious and occult symbolism.

Deacon is a reaper with years of experience when he comes across Ruth, in the course of his day job. He knows she’s different but can’t pinpoint why and there begins a fantastic tale of discovery, horror, the afterlife and passion.

Ruth’s has an unusual gift, which until she meets Deacon, she considers a curse; it frightens her because she doesn’t understand it. She shuns others, rather like an empathic person, who cannot bear to witness the pain of those around them.

Ruth’s induction into the supernatural world of reapers, angel and demons is swift, spectacular and stomach churning and as a reader you experience it all with her. A fast paced yet detailed story, there is plenty of sensual heat when Deacon and Ruth discover how much they have in common. Nate is an interesting character and so much more than he first appears. I have my own theory on who he truly is and I can’t wait for the next book to see if I’m correct.

‘Reap and Repent’ is a must for lovers of the extraordinary.

5* Review: King Hall – Scarlett Dawn (Forever Evermore series)

Paranormal Blurb

King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.

Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing: survival. Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings. Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Prodigies: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.

Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the revolution.

Paranormal My Review

King Hall (Forever Evermore, #1)King Hall, the first in the Forever Evermore series is a new adult paranormal/urban fantasy romance which is on a par with the best in this genre. The world building is first class and the society of Mysticals is comparable to the Night World stories of L.J Smith. The characters are all vivid and easy to visualise as are their paranormal skills and magic.

The story unfolds through Lily’s eyes. She has a life endangering secret. The plot is complex and initially I thought I was reading the second book in the series but as Lily reveals how she ended up at King Hall; the school where Mysticals learn their craft, this book is the ideal starting place for the series.

The story is rich in edgy, realistic dialogue and there is plenty of kick ass action between the Mystical’s and Commoners (humans). It is in the same class as Rachel Vincent’s ‘Shifter series and similarly addictive. I loved the camaraderie and humour between the prodigies, which underlines the whole story.

Suspense and tension builds to a thrilling climax at the end of the book both in terms of emotion and plot. This is where I wanted it to be a complete story rather than a series. Now I have to buy book 2.

A fabulous start to what promises to be a wonderful series.

I received a copy of this book from Escape Publishing via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

3* Review : Beautiful Revenge – JL Morris

cover52633-medium

Untitled

Heaven is a place on Earth…

Well, kind of. Kaarl is a Demon who changed his ways, left Hell behind him and now works on Earth to save the souls Lucifer had sent him to claim. In Los Angeles he has wealth and power and in Heaven he has the chance for a new start. Being a Demon freshman in a university built exclusively for Angels has its challenges but other than that things are looking promising…

With Kaarl lost to the other side, Lucifer has found another way to prey on Humanity. He sends his daughter, Persephone, along with the terrifying Four Horsemen of Apocalypse to tear the Mortal world apart and bring it to the brink of starvation. While the Horsemen are forcing the Mortals to sin to survive, reaping countless souls in the process, Persephone is forcing her way in to Kaarl’s heart with her sights set firmly on revenge.

Faced with Lucifer’s wrath, Persephone’s schemes and the seemingly unstoppable Horsemen, Kaarl is running out of options and the Mortal realm is running out of time. The past he has been so desperate to bury may hold his only chance at the saving the realm he now calls home…

My Review 2Beautiful Revenge
The description of this novel attracted me; even though it was the second book in the series and I hadn’t read book one. Interesting, well written characters with great pacing and vivid imagery but it didn’t hold my interest like I expected. There was something missing for me, maybe because I’ve read lots of apocalyptic fiction. Kaarl, Gabriel and the Twins were believable characters but they were too predictable, I like quirky, mercurial characters in this type of story.
If you like urban fantasy it’s worth a read but I would definitely suggest you read the first book in the series ‘Selfish Beings’ before you read this.
I received a copy of this book from Carina UK via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Jasmine – The Revenge Masquerade – #2 The Dragon Legacy

The Revenge Masquerade Cover October 26 14Jasmine

DSCN0618 Witch – Jasmine lives in the beautiful hills overlooking Lake Ullswater in the English Lake District.  She is destined to be a guardian witch. “The whole reason guardian witches exist is to maintain natural balance. My ancestors won’t let evil dominate any more than they would allow it to be completely destroyed.”

Power

PicMonkey CollageJasmine’s powerful aura attracts supernaturals. Demon – Xavier from The Dragon Legacy was intrigued by  Jasmine.’The dark-haired man appeared fascinated with Jasmine. – All women acquiesced when they fell under the spell of his midnight black gaze. Except Jasmine; she intrigued him. Her potent aura represented a source of usable power.

Attraction

ZaneWolf shifter – Zane fought his attraction to Jasmine in The Dragon Legacy. ‘Zane released her. Did she believe him? He cursed the rush of blood to his groin and growled with frustration. He hoped the feisty witch followed his advice.‘ but it continued into The Revenge Masquerade. ‘His hackles rose and then flattened in recognition of the scent: a mixture of flowers and spice unique to Jasmine. He resisted the urge to shift into his human form. As a wolf, their encounter would remain platonic. His mind and heart warred over the morality of his desires. He couldn’t stay. His mission necessitated he leave immediately. Was it fair to take Jasmine’s heart and leave her alone with needs mere memories wouldn’t satisfy? The wolf ignored his human conscience. Time was short and the instinctive need to brand the flame-haired witch with his mark too strong. He shifted back into his human form.

Destiny

Ghostly Experience in The Lakes

DSCN0616

I was inspired to write The Dragon Legacy from my lifelong love affair with The English Lake District. Incidentally it is also the setting for my second ghostly encounters post.

Like my ghostly experience in a haunted house this occurred on a family holiday about thirty years later with my own children. Not a spooky house this time but a family walk by the beautiful Lake Ullswater on a bright August day.  At the time none of us attached any supernatural significance to the event until afterwards…

Photo0039Taking advantage of the beautiful summer weather about ten years ago we decided to walk from Glenridding to How Town before catching the steamer onto Pooley Bridge and back to Glenridding. The walk is about 7 miles and seemed the ideal afternoon pursuit. Ullswater steamers run between Glenridding and Pooley Bridge and stop at How Town.

Lots of other people had the same idea and the first stretch of the walk was full of families with children running around.  As we left the village behind we realised a young boy about the same age as my ten-year old son was walking with our kids. They chattered happily for about five minutes and then I became worried that he would be separated from his family, although when I looked around no one seemed to have missed him.

We reached a patch of grass close to the lakeside where some families were having picnics and decided to stop for a drink. The boy stayed with us for  a while kicking the stones and chatting to other children and families.  As we were leaving he came up to us and asked where we were headed.

“We’re walking to the How Town pier.” I said knowing it was approximately five miles ahead.

“You’ve a long walk ahead of you.” The boy replied.

I thought this was a strange remark for a child to make. We decided he must be a local child from one of the farms who made friends with children who passed by. We set off and when I looked back the boy vanished. I scanned the groups around but he wasn’t there, we carried on assuming he returned home.

During the long  walk the weather changed and we got very wet, a common occurrence in these parts. The seven mile walk seemed  to take forever as we got lost and ended up following one of my husband’s short cuts, never a good thing.

Photo0027

When we finally arrived at How Town Pier exhausted and wet we’d missed the last return ferry and faced a repeat of the long walk to get home again. As we convinced the kids they could make the return journey despite their blisters the boy’s words came back to us. We definitely did have a long walk ahead.

We trudged homeward  and discussed the boy and his prophetic remarks. My daughter said he’d been dressed strangely  like a child from  the 1930s or 1940’s something we didn’t think about until afterwards even though it set him apart from the other children.

We looked for him on the way back as we passed farms and campsites but there was no trace. We couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something eerie about  him and the whole experience.

Hours later we reached Glenridding and  returned to where we were staying. Later that evening at the hotel bar my husband recounted our little adventure to some locals over a pint. They didn’t seem surprised and assured him the boy was a regular occurrence often seen by tourists  on that part of the lake.

Intrigued we walked that way the next day but never saw him again.

When  I researched ghostly happening on the lake there were stories of fairies and lake monsters as Ullswater is known as ‘The Dark Lake’ but nothing documented about the boy.

Just coincidence or something more?

Author Interview: Cally Ryanne

Today I am interviewing Cally Ryanne whose debut Young Adult novel Echoes of Balance will be released by Reuts on 17 December 2013.

Welcome to First Steps Cally.

Thanks Jane its great to be here.

What influenced your career choice as a writer?

I don’t really know if I can consider it a career choice; I have a minor in creative writing, but my day job has very little to do with writing (very little because, obvi, literacy is everyone’s problem). But that being said, I’ve been making up stories – and eventually writing them down – ever since I was little, so I think the whole full book thing was just an inevitable hold over of being an only child, or something. And I enjoy it, to boot – you should always do what you enjoy.

What would you like your potential readers to know about ‘Cally Ryanne’?

It’s a pseudonym! It has a blog! It enjoys listening to this one extremely well-trained Pandora station!

What inspired you to write your debut novel ‘Echoes of Balance’?

Chloe (and most of the other characters in Echoes Of Balance) have been with me for a really long time. Like, since I was 11-ish. They had A LOT of remakes between then and now, and a lot of tweaks to their ‘big story’ as I became more of an adult. I took a break from them towards the end of high school/start of college, but when I finally picked them back up, I felt like I was ready to finally give them the stories they deserved. Echoes Of Balance is the first book in Chloe’s story; there’s a few off shoots planned for other characters.

Where do you create your wonderful characters and stories?

Oof, nowadays? Mostly in my apartment. I have a great desk in my bedroom and I have a living room that hates WI-fi, so it’s a nice distraction free environment. When I was writing the first draft of Echoes of Balance, a lot of it was in my college art studio and also at my job. I worked at a place with a lot of downtime, so I’d plot in a notebook and then go home and write.

What is your favourite time of day to write?

Evening-ish I guess? Anytime is fine as long as I can get focused. I don’t do well in extremes – too early and too late and I just won’t be able to think straight.

Tell us a little about ‘Echoes of Balance’.

It’s book one of a planned trilogy that makes up the first half of Chloe’s story. Chloe is the youngest of the Naimei – an ancient line of people charged with keeping the universe in balance. The tasks can often be tedious, and as the youngest, Chloe is always stuck with the most boring tasks. She’s tried to rebel before by striking out on her own as a vampire hunter, but she always comes back to the fold – this time, just in time to help her family to prevent the return of Pan and Damonos, the original demons. At first, her family thinks the situation is – as most imbalances are to the Naimei – an easy fix. But then their Ways begin to fail and Chloe is approached be a debonair vampire named Josef who seems to know more about the situation than any creature should. It wouldn’t be a bad thing if the Naimei weren’t incredibly secretive, xenophobic, and slow to place trust in people. Chloe finds herself quickly led to a darker side of the supernatural, and she has to decide quickly if she accepts the help of the outsider at the risk of betraying her family in order to save the world.

As a new author have you any tips for other new writers?

Mostly, just stick with it. Be willing to rework. I’ve started writing stories about Chloe since I was a kid, and it took me over a decade to find the one that made sense for her as a character and the world she lived in and actually stick. Be willing to go back to the basics and strip everything else away. And if you get to the point of writing something you like, still be willing to rework it! I wish I had a screenshot of what my document looks like after a round of edits. It’s crazy!

Have you written any other books to be released soon?

I don’t know about to be released SOON but there is a draft of the second book in The Ways Trilogy underway and pretty heavy plans for books after that. There’s also a book already started about Maya, a minor character in Chloe’s story.

Thanks for visiting First Steps  today Cally. I am looking forward to reading Echoes of Balance and reviewing here on 18 December 2013.

Here’s the  Echoes Of Balance blurb:

For Chloe Moraine, fighting wild bears– and the occasional vampire– is a better pastime than the tediousness of keeping the universe in balance. But balancing is the family business. It comes with being one of the last in the ancient line of Naimei.

So when the impending return of the Original Demons threatens global harmony, Chloe is obligated to help. Even when that means the dull-as-dirt task of following a human girl who “might be involved, maybe,” instead of the thrilling hunt she craves.

With their powerful magic and ancient Ways, Chloe’s family is unconcerned, certain they’ll quickly fix the imbalance while she’s preoccupied with human high school. But when the Ways start to fail, the threat becomes more serious, and the only person that seems to know anything is a debonair vampire with an offer to help.

If Chloe chooses to trust him, and the darker side of the supernatural he represents, she’ll betray her family and risk losing them, and herself, in the process. But if he’s right, he may just be their only chance to stop the return of the Originals and save the world.

Maybe high school won’t be so boring after all.

Here’s more about Cally

Cally Ryanne is a vegetarian, with a serious avocado habit, in search of the perfect leather jacket. She graduated from a Midwestern art school in 2012 with a BFA in Drawing and a minor in Creative Writing, and then proceeded to do exactly what most art students do after graduation – nothing to do with art. She currently teaches math in New York City to a bunch of kids who call her “Miss.” In her spare time (between the day job and the night-time superhero persona), she writes, piecing together characters and stories that have been following her around since she was a child. She currently lives in uptown Manhattan with some awesome roommates – including her best friend from middle school – and a cat that can’t keep his tongue in his mouth. Echoes of Balance is her debut novel and the first in The Ways Trilogy, a Young Adult urban fantasy.
