My Review -1

Stricken’ is the first book in an exciting urban fantasy romance series ‘The War Scrolls’, with fallen angels, demons, humans ,shifters, vampires and hybrids. This fast paced story follows Aubrey, more than the human girl she first appears to be. Her father and brother are dead and she is on the run from enemies too numerous to count. Killian is half human and half fallen Angel. He protects Aubrey but does he also have an agenda she knows nothing about?
The relationship that develops between the Aubrey and Killian makes them both risk everything to keep the other safe but will it also risk the future of humanity? There is acute sensual tension between the two as they fight to survive and find out how to stop the deadly virus. Is their attraction deeper than their human sides bonding?
The world building in this story is all important and skilfully done. You feel part of this urban hell and look for danger every time you turn a page. The characters are vivid and realistic, even though their skills are supernatural.
There is an interesting dynamic between Dom and Killian as they both vie for Aubrey’s attention against a background of war, danger and a deadly virus that threatens their existence and ultimately the humans they protect. Soul mates, forbidden love and secrets from the past that have the power to destroy their future
Mystery, deceit and suspense, vivid imagery and great fight scenes, enrich the plot and make this an exciting read.
The ending puts you on the edge of your seat and answers the questions about Aubrey and Killian. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Excerpt - 1

Killian stepped forward, forcing her to tilt her head back to look up at him. He still seemed so big to her. He still overwhelmed her. But he didn’t frighten her anymore.

“You look tired.” She fought the urge to lift her hand to touch his gorgeous face.

“I am,” he said, the corner of his lips turning up in a half smile.

 “Oh.”

He stared down at her, his half smile slipping. A dizzying parade of emotions swirled through his eyes. She couldn’t read them all, but she understood enough. He felt as torn as she did.

“Will I remember you three years from now?” she whispered, her heart aching with the fear that she would forget him as she had so much else…and with fear that she would remember him. That she would survive this nightmare and he would haunt her for the rest of her days like so much else did.

“Do you want to remember me?” He took another step in her direction.

“I don’t know.” She frowned, confused. “You make me feel like maybe the world isn’t so bad. Like maybe I’m safe with you. I don’t think I want to forget that.”

Killian tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and cupped her cheek gently in one big hand. “You are safe with me. I won’t let anyone hurt you, Aubrey.”

She stared at him for a long, silent moment. He’d promised before that he wouldn’t hurt her, but even then an unspoken fear had stood between them like a wall. A little voice whispered that if she got too close, he would hurt her as badly as the things in her past hurt. That voice had stopped whispering when he’d kissed her today, and wasn’t that odd?

 “You hurt me today.”

He bowed his head, letting his hand fall away from her face. “I’m sorry.”

Her heart ached a little at the agonized way he said it. As if it shamed him to know he’d hurt her. As if, maybe, he cared more than he should too.

“Why did you?” she asked, not accusing, but curious. She wanted to understand him. No, she needed to understand him on some level she couldn’t even explain to herself. “You wanted me, didn’t you?”

His gaze sought hers, honesty shining from his angel-bright eyes. “More than you know.”

Aubrey took a deep breath, letting her lungs fill with air even as her heart filled with his confession. And just as quickly, the buoyant feeling vanished. “It doesn’t change anything, though, does it?” she whispered.

 “Do you want it to?”

She hesitated for a long moment, unsure. And then her shoulders slumped, the breath she’d taken expelling in a long sigh. “I’m sorry.”

Killian gave her a sad smile and reached for her again. He swept a finger beneath her eye, collecting the teardrop she hadn’t even realized had fallen. “No apologies,” he whispered, bringing his finger to his mouth. He stuck out the tip of his tongue and lapped that single bead of moisture from his fingertip. “You owe me nothing.”

If that was true, why did she feel like crying?’

For Terran, life was simple – until she meets the new art gallery owner, Aiden.

Through him, she finds herself surrounded by terrifying nightmares and gods. When an ancient evil threatens to escape and unleash all Hell, Terran must dive into a world she never knew existed to save them all…even if that means giving up her life to do it.

My Review 2

Chasing the SunThis story is a fusion of urban paranormal/fantasy and Egyptian mythology played out against the wild, untamed setting of Alaska. Not surprisingly it caught my interest from the first page.

Told from the aptly named heroine, Terran’s point of view you are immediately aware of her despair and sadness, two years after her tragic loss. Barely able to function in the ‘real world’, she lives through her strange dreams, which for a time allow her to capture what she has lost. The dream sequences are vivid and evocative of Terran’s current life and future.

There is intricate world building in the first half of the story. This slows this pace a little but allows the reader to understand Terran and empathise with her as she struggles with her grief and new discoveries. Terran thinks she is losing her grip on reality but maybe not?

This story is full of alpha males who all effect Terran deeply. Supernatural events clash with the ordinary; she discovers no one is really what they seem. The characters’ duality makes the collision of the mythological world with contemporary Alaska imaginable. For me it is the poignancy of this story that makes it hard to put down. The fast paced ending leaves us with more questions than answers. I can’t wait for book 2.

  Excerpt -2

chasing the sun-medium-1“Aren’t these Aiden’s pieces?” Micah had caught up to me and seemed as perplexed as I did.
“Yeah, I guess so.”
“Who would have thought he’d donate his work?” Micah commented and then lost interest, walking away as she saw someone she recognized.
I stayed, staring in shock.
“Don’t look so surprised. Your friend Jon’s charity is truly for a good cause.”
I shouldn’t have lingered. By now I should have known to avoid anything having to do with Aiden. Many of the contributing artists were here to help promote their pieces so I should have known. But somehow he always caught me off guard.
Actually, I’m surprised you have a heart at all.” My disdain oozed off my words as I gave him the biggest scowl I could muster.
However ugly I thought his attitude, I couldn’t say the same about his appearance. Aiden cleaned up nicely in his all-black tuxedo. His hair had been gelled down, but you could still see the natural wave of it. His tux looked as if it had been custom-made, which made me curious. How many black-tie events did he go to in order to have purchased a custom tux?
But, who cared? With my shoulders back, chest raised, and chin up I turned my head, grabbed my dress on the sides and walked away. Screw him.
I got about three steps away before I heard him.
“You look beautiful,” he said to my back. It stopped me, my heart thumping loud in my chest. An immeasurable amount of time had passed since someone besides my friends had told me I was beautiful. I could feel him staring at me, but I didn’t move. I only stood there, frozen.
“Terran,” His voice was soft with yearning. It was then that I gained enough courage to walk away. I had already made up my mind about him. He was too complicated and I was tired of the ups and downs of his mood. This man would break my spirit, at least what little of it I fought to keep.
