Olympus Texas Stacey Swann 4*#Review @StaceySwann @wnbooks @orionbooks #OlympusTexas @RandomTTours #BlogTour #BookReview #LiteraryFiction #Saga #Family #Mythology

A boisterous, big-hearted, thoroughly modern family saga set in Texas, in which marriages struggle, rivalries flare and secrets explode.

When March Briscoe returns to East Texas two years after he was caught having an affair with his brother’s wife, the Briscoe family becomes once again the talk of the small town of Olympus. His mother, June, hardly welcomes him back with open arms. Her husband’s own past affairs have made her tired of being the long-suffering spouse. Is it, perhaps, time for a change?

But within days of March’s arrival, someone is dead, marriages are upended, and even the strongest of alliances are shattered. In the end, the ties that hold them together might be exactly what drag them all down.

Olympus, Texas combines the archetypes of Greek and Roman mythology with the psychological complexity of a messy family. After all, at some point, we all wonder: what good is this destructive force we call love?

A big-hearted debut with technicolour characters, plenty of Texas swagger, a powder keg of a plot, Olympus, Texas is filled with all the ingredients of a great American novel: big family, dark secrets, adultery, betrayal, messy relationships, rage, grace, shocking revelations, addiction, pain and redemption. Perfect for fans of Meg Wolitzer’s The Uncoupling, Curtis Sittenfeld’s Eligible andClaire Lombardo’s The Most Fun We Ever Had.

I received a copy of this book from W&N Books in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

The story draws the reader into the Briscoe family’s life and the surrounding community, of Olympus Texas, with the first few pages of vivid description and vibrant characterisation. From the outset, it’s clear they are not a happy family, but despite this bound by powerful emotions.

The parallels with mythological characters give the story added depth and interest. The family members are driven, and in most cases, unbending. Their behaviour mirrors the attitudes of the gods they represent.

The quotes, and chapters that explore the event that define the characters, are particularly illuminating. Whilst many of the characters are unlikeable, the story is addictive and compelling. The relatively fast pacing holds the reader’s interest.

This is an original blend of family drama and ancient mythology in a setting that complements both.

Love and a Little White Lie Tammy L. Gray 4*#Review @tlgraybooks @RevellBooks #AStateOfGrace @lovebooksgroup @lovebooksgroup #lovebookstours #Romance #Inspiration #Church #Texas #LoveandaLittleWhiteLie

January Sanders grew up believing karma was more reliable than an imaginary higher power, but after suffering her worst heartbreak in 29 years, she’s open to just about anything, including taking a temporary position at her aunt’s church. Keeping her lack of faith a secret, January is determined to use her photographic memory to help Grace Community’s overworked staff, all while scraping herself off rock bottom.

What she doesn’t count on is meeting the church’s handsome and charming guitarist, who not only is a strong believer, but has also dedicated his life to Christian music. It’s a match set for disaster, and yet January has no ability to stay away, even if it means pretending to have faith in a God she doesn’t believe in.

Only this time, keeping secrets isn’t as easy as she thought it would be. Especially when she’s constantly running into her aunt’s landscape architect, who seems to know everything about her past and present sins and makes no apologies about pushing her to deal with feelings she’d rather keep buried.

Torn between two worlds incapable of coexisting, can January find the healing that’s eluded her or will her resistance to the truth ruin any chance of happiness?

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

This is an inspirational story of second chances, finding your path in life and learning to forgive yourself. It’s setting in a vibrant Church in Texas gives the story its focal point, and it’s fascinating to understand the workings of this diverse organisation.
.
January takes a role in her aunt’s church when her life implodes after a broken love affair. There’s a family drama, friendship and gentle romance in this story which explores how January finds herself and her faith through working with the church and meetings the people there.

The first person point of view gives the reader direct insight into January’s emotions and thoughts and shows how she changes. The supporting characters are believable and give the story depth.

Not my usual genre but it’s engaging and well-written and an interesting read.

She belongs to the one man who betrayed him and knows Reade’s hidden family secret. Yet Reade can’t seem to love anyone except the one woman he can’t have. Or can he make her mine? When Gwen Clark’s senator husband runs off with his intern and all their money, the ensuing scandal turns her life upside down. Deserted, penniless and desperate to provide for her six-year-old daughter, Gwen has no one to turn to but Reade Walker. The one man her heart desperately wants, but her pride dreads having to ask for help. My Thoughts…

This is a friend to lover romantic novella with relatable characters and sensual romance. I listened to this story in audiobook form, and it was enjoyable. The narration is professional, and her interpretation of the characters and the plot immerses the reader in the story making it an authentic experience.

The plot is easy to follow with great sensual tension between Gwen and Reade. There is also a charming family element to this story, which makes the happy ever after more rewarding. This easy to listen to audiobook is perfect for lovers of sensual romance and happy endings.

Here’s  a sample of my 5* reviews on Amazon

‘A little romance, a little suspense, a little murder, a little mystery…this book has it all. Hunt did a wonderful job crafting a well-rounded story with well-developed main characters that we quickly fall in love with and root for until the very end. Without giving away the ending, I will tell you that the twists and turns don’t stop until the very last page. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you realize there’s still more to be revealed.’ 5* Review

‘Jane Hunt did a marvelous job of keeping me on the edge of the seat with twists and turns all the while making you root for the characters you can’t help but to fall in love with.’ 5* Review.

‘ Good storytelling with believable characters and suspense. Great combination. Looking forward to reading more from this author.’ 5* Review

‘The story is written in bite-sized point of view changes and has more of a cosy mystery edge to the suspense that I really enjoyed as it allowed the author to focus on the developing relationship between hero and heroine. Rest assured though, there is still danger, passion, plenty of intrigue and some deft surprises thrown in to keep the interest and enjoyment level high. There is a subtle darkness that is well executed and ramps up nicely throughout the plot so that if, like me, you like your Westerns with a side-order of psychological suspense, you’ll love The Dangerous Gift.’ 5* Review.

Blurb -2

The fateful day Mimi Marcus has dreaded begins with a phone call…

The wife of a U.S. Marine, Mimi spent countless nights worried that her husband Joel would fall in the line of duty. He had fought valiantly and served his country with honor. That’s exactly what they tell her when they deliver the news—Joel was taken by the enemy in Afghanistan. Her husband is dead.

In desperate need of closure, Mimi travels to the one place Joel still has ties—The Marcus Ranch in Texas, inherited by his handsome younger brother Austin.

New beginnings are only an illusion…

The closer Mimi grows to the Marcus family, the more she considers it home. But when suspicions of Joel’s past surface, Austin refuses to disclose family secrets—even to his brother’s widow. It’s only by accident she uncovers evidence of Joel’s tainted past. Devastated by his lies and betrayal, she slowly opens up to Austin, and together they unfold layers of pain and grief.

Mimi is sure she’ll never love again, but is Austin the man to prove her wrong? Then the unthinkable happens…

Just as Mimi finds new hope in a future with Austin, Joel returns home from war. Enraged, traumatized, and teetering on the edge of insanity, Joel confesses to a history of deception, revealing yet another secret—this one too terrible to forgive.

In an awful twist of fate, Joel proves marriage vows are made to be honored.
No matter what.

My Review

This story isn’t what I expected but it’s enthralling and I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished. At the beginning I expected a supernatural element but the story’s twist, is more down to earth, yet keeps you guessing and gasping right to the end.

Mimi and Joel’s serendipitous meeting and whirlwind romance is like a fairytale. Joel’s imminent deployment to a war zone is the only darkness on their horizon. Mimi’s heart rips apart when the unthinkable happens. With more questions than answers when her best friend offers her a lifeline, she grabs it. Meeting her husband’s estranged brother really blows her life apart.

The characters are complex and force you to take sides. Fast paced, the plot is full of surprises and interwoven into the intricate story, romance gives sweet relief to the angst and darkness. Full of impact the ending devastates but the hopeful little twist at the very end made me smile.

Author Bio -1

Novelist, movie addict, and animal lover, Cristina Slough is the author of:

Till Death Us Do Part, her debut novel.

Cristina has always been a bookworm, rarely seen without a pen and paper in her hand, she loves delving into a literacy fictional world of her own.

At the age of 11, her junior school teacher told her mother that she would be wasting her life if she didn’t become an author. Throughout her teenage years and beyond, her parents spurred her on to keep writing. She later began a career in commercial real estate, working in London’s West End, a corporate bubble where she was unable to fuel her passion to write.

It was on her Californian honeymoon in 2012 that the bug to write was becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. After visiting Yosemite National Park she was inspired by the natural beauty of the land that surrounded her. Holding a special place in her heart, Yosemite would later be written into her debut novel.

She finally gave up the ‘big smoke’ when her son, Lucas, was born in October 2013.

When Lucas was a newborn, Cristina was told to sleep when the baby sleeps. She never could. There was a calling inside her to write. After getting to grips with her new role as a mother, she began working a psychological thriller, but she couldn’t fully connect to the characters she created. She ditched the manuscript and started Till Death Us Do Part(Limitless Publishing, 2015).

Cristina is married to Adam, who runs a successful business; together they share their Bedfordshire home with their son, crazy white German Shepherd and three spoiled cats. They can be found trekking through woodlands, or around the many shops Cristina loves to explore. As a family, they love to travel frequently, the United States being a firm favourite.

‘Writing has touched my life in every decade. At fifty, I took a risk and made writing my career, fulfilling a lifetime ambition.’
I enjoy writing blogs, book reviews and especially stories. Vivid imagery, atmospheric settings, strong females and sensual males are essential for my stories. Everyday life and ordinary people inspire me. How would someone react, if faced with something extraordinary? A thread of romance runs through my all my books, whether they be suspense, fantasy or historical.
I want to let my readers escape their lives for a while, experience new places, new people and most importantly, new emotional lows and highs My favorite parts of the writing process are; finding a person, event or place that makes me want to write a story about it and the writing itself; when your fingers cannot type fast enough, to transcribe your thoughts.
Family is very important to me. My two children are my greatest achievement to date.
I am an animal welfare supporter and regularly use social media to promote animal welfare issues.

5* Review: Too Hot to Handle (Bad Boys (Zero to 60) Book 10 – Susan Arden

Adult Read

Blurb 2016 -1

What began in a grueling game of cat-n-mouse with her step-uncle, has Margo on the move. In Never Say Never (prequel and included in Too Hot), she’s on the run and ends up doing a body slide right into the arms of a recently discharged Marine. Outside of a crazy fling, there’s zero room in her life for men. Handsome distractions are dangerous to her health.

From working a fence line and dealing with cattle, Rod is thrust back into the line of duty. And he promptly fails. He crosses the line in a no-brainer mission: go and get the girl. On no hands is he prepared for Margo or her smart-mouth, right hook, and cargo to hide.

Together Margo and Rod are as volatile as flint and gunpowder. Bordering on taboo, their raw attraction is a recipe for disaster. Especially when the stakes are raised.

Their stormy love affair forces them over the edge and out of their comfort zones as they wrangle in-laws, Mother Nature, and a slick conman. A regular trial by fire. But a battle worth fighting means taking a stand and they’ll do whatever it takes to stay together. Even if it means they have to lie, steal, cheat.
Or kill.

IT’S HOT.
IT’S DIRTY.
ZERO TO 60
SEX UP AGAINST A WALL AND SOME.

If you can’t stand the heat, better not come near this nuclear fusion Western, ’cause baby you will get burnt!

My Review 2016-1

28383748

This book gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘cute meet’-who knew airports could be this exciting?
I’ve wanted to read Rod’s story, the ex Marine with issues, since first meeting him in an earlier ‘Bad Boys’ book, and it doesn’t disappoint. This is a hard hitting, on the edge story. Margo and Rod’s exciting and unconventional relationship puts the reader through the emotional wringer. Emotion shadows every graphic and scorching touch, making it worth reading.
Margo carries too much guilt around with her for one so young and when you meet her step-uncle Axel you realise why. He is so easy to hate and the perfect antagonist for our anti-hero Rod who will save Margo at any cost, even if she doesn’t thank him for it.
Enriched by the setting at the rodeo and on the ranch, this fast paced love story is easy to read and hard to put down. If you like your cowboys sexy and troubled, your heroines feisty and opinionated and your love scenes detailed and raw, this is for you
