When builder Terry Johnson spots what he thinks is a bargain he can’t resist but to succumb to temptation. The large, detached house stands on the side of a railway track and would be perfect for his needs … and it’s cheap!

But Billington Manor has a very tainted history, and the grounds upon which it stands were part of an unsolved murder back in the 1850s. Terry is about to discover that the road to hell is not always paved with good intentions.

Based upon a true incident, Ryder On The Storm is a stand-alone supernatural crime novella from the author of the IMP series, featuring desk sergeant Maurice Cragg.

Terry slammed the door shut.

His head was all over the place, not to mention his stomach. If he’d eaten anything at all he was sure it would have reappeared. Pins and needles raced up and down both his arms.

What the fuck had he walked into? Was George a ghost? Was he being haunted? Is that what the Billingtons had been on about when they said “he’d” take care of the place. And who exactly were the Billingtons? What part did they play in it all?

My Thoughts…

The blurb for the first story in this book intrigued me. I like stories with a supernatural element. This story starts in the past with the discovery of a body. Then in the present day, a builder is viewing an old house with a view to redevelopment. The elderly couple are strange and the logistics of the sale is similarly odd, but the builder’s eyes are focused on profit.

What follows is suspenseful and dark. I read it through twice, and the second time it resonated. The twist of the story is a popular one, but it is effectively used here. The more you think about it, the darker it becomes.

The other three short stories feature the author’s characters from the IMP series, which I haven’t read. The first two are Agatha Christie-style murder mysteries. Each is prefaced with an author’s note detailing how the story came about. This has intrinsic interest and puts each short story in context. The stories are well-plotted with complex characters and decent twists. All have engaging settings. Each delivers a good murder-mystery, and police procedural genre story.

I enjoyed reading all of these stories, perhaps the last three short stories are my favourite, and make me want to read the IMP series.

5* Review: Trouble In Tinsel Town – Aimée Duffy – Summer Flings #1

22724185

Part 1 of Summer Flings – a fun, flirty and laugh out loud Rom Com series of short stories.

Armed with a degree from Oxford that she doesn’t have a clue what to do with, Ciara Bree convinces her two best friends, Elle and Gem to spend their first summer of freedom backpacking across the globe. Now it’s time to shop, sunbathe, think about boys for a change, and party hard…

First stop: LA!

The girls hit Tinseltown for a few days of shopping, star spotting, and even a movie premiere!

But their plan to sneak into an exclusive celeb party in West Hollywood backfires. Elle’s gorgeous older cousin, Zack, is called to the rescue and despite knowing she should stay away, Ciara just can’t seem to resist him.

The ideal summer treat for those relaxing days soaking up the sun!

Trouble in Tinseltown (Summer Flings #1)My Review

Trouble in Tinsel Town is the first delicious slice of fun and flirty mayhem for Ciara, Elle and Gem. The Oxford graduates leave their studies behind and set off on a backpacking tour of the world. LA is the first stop. Believe me if I could experience backpacking in the style these three do I would be first in line.
The setting is glitzy and glamorous, seen from Ciara’s point of view. Elle and Gem are trust fund babes but Ciara is different and looking at celebrity lifestyle through her eyes grounds this story in a pleasing way.
The three friends are likeable characters. Elle and Gem appear shallow but I suspect their individual stories will make the women beneath the public face, complex and interesting. Ciara is intelligent and attractive but a little scared of living. Elle and Gem care about her and want her to have fun and that’s what a trip of a lifetime should be right?
It couldn’t be a summer fling without a hot man and Zack certainly fulfils the role. Serious and sexy Ciara finds him hard to resist but is this just a fling or something more, guess we’ll have to see what happens in Miami.
Trouble in Tinsel Town is full of humorous, realistic, dialogue. I was ready to jump in their luggage after enjoying the pool and the party, eager to see what happens at the next destination of their adventure.

4*Review: Morgan’s Match – Krystal Shannan -Short Story

718f3c33f62a5941773de65f7a7a3d7ed1eaf443-thumbWhat’s a girl to do when she can find love for everyone but herself? Computer genius and matchmaking witch extraordinaire, Morgan O’Neal, created a computer program from an old family recipe. Her business is a huge success, churning out dozens of matched happy couples, but her love life is still where it stalled out years ago.

The biggest catch to being a matchmaker…you can’t work a spell on yourself.

When Connor McGuire, hot high school flame, suddenly inserts himself back into her life, will the hunky Irish warlock seal the deal? Or will a decade-old betrayal keep them apart forever?

My Review

I loved this sexy, romantic paranormal short story.
Morgan is a witch with Irish ancestry and a huge magical family. A successful career woman, she combined her inherited skills with technical knowledge and created the perfect dating match programme. Settled in Texas she has found her true self but not her soul mate.
Morgan and Connor are well-developed characters which have great chemistry. The sensual romance enhances the story. There are lots of clues to other interesting characters and stories which I hope the author will write about soon. This is the first story I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more of her paranormal romantic tales.
