There’s a serial killer at large. His victims just happen to resemble Kaitlyn—dark haired, pale skin and athletic build. Kaitlyn goes undercover, attending a prestigious high school to try to lure the killer into a trap and save the lives of other potential victims. Will she be able to catch the killer before his body count rises? Or will she become the next victim?

My Review

Fatal Abduction (IFCS, #3)‘Fatal Abduction’ is a psychological thriller with paranormal elements, aimed at young adults. This is the first of Julia Crane’s books I have read. I didn’t realise it was part of a series until I looked on Goodreads and found out it is book 3 in the IFCS series. The story works as a standalone read, with enough back-story to make the characters understandable. For an enhanced reading experience, read the series in sequence.
The moving prologue sets the scene perfectly. The well-paced plot flows well. The multi person points of view, make the story immediate and realistic. The serial killer is threatening because of his apparent normality and again this adds to the story’s authenticity.
It did seem a little rushed in parts, much is made of Kaitlyn posing as bait for the serial killer in the blurb but this is an anti-climax because she never appears to be under threat from the killer. I liked the victim point of view from Eliza and the paranormal threads in her point of view, more of this would have increased the drama of the story. A little more detail about why the antagonist became a serial killer, maybe by making his flashbacks more detailed would have made him more menacing.
‘Fatal Abduction’ is an interesting, quick read for those who like thrillers and covert avengers.
I received a copy of this book from the author via Mark My Word Book Publicity in return for an honest review.

Protecting the Enemy Cover

Untitled

Julianna Fox was made for her job. Or so she is told. The only memory Julianna has of her past is after the explosion. She was a nameless victim until a man pulled her out of the darkness and gave her new life. A new purpose, because anything is better than being no one. Expert assassin, Reid Castleton, has been told to kill the only woman he ever loved if he wants to live. When he finds his fiancee, he can’t go through with the hit, even if it means losing his own life. Either she can’t remember who she is or is damn good at acting.
Neither one knows who to trust. Both make a truce until they can find out why the leader of ETE 7 wants them both dead. What they uncover is a long line of lies and deception that started the moment Julianna was conceived. Will love conquer all or will fear make them do the unthinkable?

Excerpt -2

Julianna reached across the table and handed Reid a fortune cookie. He crushed the yellowish-orange shell, then read the strip of white paper aloud. If you want it… get it. Reid shrugged and smiled. He walked around the table and grabbed Julianna by her legs, lifting her up over his shoulder. Her hair hung a curtain over her face. Dizzy with laughter, the blood rushed to her head.
Julianna bolted upright in bed and rubbed her eyes. Had the dream been just a dream or was it a memory? Her life was like a yard sale puzzle missing most of its pieces.
Reid sat on the edge of the mattress. “Hey, sleeping beauty. You were laughing in your sleep.”
She felt her face heat up. “I was?”
He touched the tip of her nose as if nothing had happened between them.
“Yeah, it was kind of cute.”
Julianna forced herself to roll her eyes instead of smile. She wouldn’t tell him about her silly dream which is probably all it was. “Great, why were you watching me sleep?”
“I wasn’t, but I did come over here when you started laughing. It was quite entertaining.”
She tossed the covers aside and got up. “I’m so glad I could amuse you.” Exasperated, but also captivated with the man, she stomped into the bathroom to take a shower. As she took off her clothes she closed her eyes. She ached to feel the way she had in her dream. She wanted Reid. God help her she wanted him bad.

My Review 2

‘Protecting the Enemy’ is a fast paced, romantic thriller. The suspense is absorbing. You definitely want to know what happens next to Julianna and Reid; two characters that give the story its humour and poignancy. The heat level of this novel is more sensual than sweet, which fits with the assassin profiles of the heroine and hero. The love scenes enhance the story’s emotion and conflict.

The author’s gift of setting the scene for the story’s action and conflict is a signature of her writing, which she uses to great effect here. It’s the attention to detail and vivid descriptions that make ‘Protecting the Enemy’ believable, easy to visualise and engage with.

The plot is contemporary and she doesn’t shy away from some graphic details for authenticity. The twists are gentle and there is no chance of losing your way with this story.

Julianna is a kick ass heroine with a conscience that threatens to destroy her when she finds out the truth. Reid wants to carve out an identity for himself to escape from his less than ideal upbringing.

A vivid, action packed read with lots of heartfelt emotion, thrills and plenty of sensual heat.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

The Keepers by Rae Rivers.

Here’s a taster of what you can expect from The Keepers:Declan –

“You lied to me, misled me, attacked me,” Declan murmured, dipping his head toward hers, “but what we had three months ago wasn’t fake, was it?” Kate’s gaze faltered to his lips, heat pulsing between them. But she didn’t deny it.

Declan Bennett has zero tolerance for thieves. He and his brothers, the Keepers, are fiercely protective of their witch, Sienna, and their privacy. Release Day Blitz: Hard to Hold – Incy Black – 5* Review

HardToHold

Today is release day for debut author Incy Black. I  have already read and reviewed ‘Hard to Hold’ which is a great read  as you will see from my review below. Here’s an introduction to the story:

‘Anna Key Marshall is about to get what she’s always wanted: a baby. Granted, it’s through a sperm donor instead of her ex-husband, but you can’t have everything. She has no idea why someone wants her dead, but she’ll do whatever it takes to protect her unborn child—even if it means turning to her ex, the Black Ops specialist who broke her heart.

Five years ago, British Intelligence agent Nick Marshall slammed the door on the woman who betrayed him. But now Anna’s back in his life with a vengeance, pregnant and full of attitude. He’d like nothing better than to walk away, but with her life on the line, he has no choice but to do what he does best—protect her at all costs.

As old wounds resurface, Nick begins to doubt his version of what went down with Anna so long ago. And he begins to believe they might have a second chance together. But with Anna’s would-be killer on the loose—it will take the full force and fury of his protective instincts, fueled by a powerful love he can’t leave behind, to hold on to the woman he still loves.

Read Excerpt of Hard to Hold

My Review

Hard to Hold’ is a gritty, fast paced story. It will keep you on the edge of your seat, reading long into the night. This dark tale is full of missed chances, wrong choices and lives blighted by traumatic pasts. The question is can they save their future?

Action and suspense colour every scene building to an explosive climax.

There is plenty of sensual heat between Anna and Nick. Hot love scenes the only positive of their volatile relationship. Anna is a great character, intelligent and driven. Like the mythical Phoenix she creates a successful life out of the ashes of her failed marriage. Nick is more in touch with his dark side and believes he is unworthy of true happiness. No wonder these two fight whenever they are in close proximity.

‘Hard to Hold’ is a unique blend of angst and sensual romance interwoven with nail-biting suspense. Graphic visual imagery depicts the often violent action and there is a particularly menacing antagonist. This will appeal to those who like me prefer their romantic suspense dark and twisty.

I received a copy of this book from the author/ Entangled Ignite via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Find out more about Incy Black

It took a swan dive from a roof to convince Incy (aged 5) she wasn’t an avenging fairy and that no, she most certainly couldn’t fly. Bruised but undefeated she retreated deeper into her make-believe world populated with the brave and the poisonous.
When not fighting injustice and righting wrongs on ‘Planet Incy’ she works as a Marketing Director. (Unfortunately, her law degree languishes unused, the distinction between good and evil proving too worrisome in real life.)
Her five children are well versed in what scares her (most things) and delight in pushing her neurotic buttons—at their peril.

Without Doubt C J Azevedo Release Day

Today is release day for C J Azevedo’s Without Doubt
Without Doubt ECOVER-Cj Azevedo-high‘Ava Sterling is tough and the most straight-laced girl you will ever meet. Her family and her past have managed to alter her future permanently and she has no desire to allow anyone else into her life or her heart for fear of rejection or further altering. Ava is alone in the world with the exception of the grandest responsibility she did not create on her own but on her own she will carry for the rest of her life.

Declan James is a MMA fighter, party all night kind of guy. Responsibility is nowhere to be found in his life or so he allows everyone around him to believe. Coming from wealth and a carefree lifestyle, Declan gets what he wants, always. And what he wants is Ava. In his pursuit of getting what he wants, Ava in his bed, his plan changes quickly without his consent. Against his plans of being the next hot bachelor to cross the tabloids as he makes his way to being the Ultimate Light Heavyweight Champion, Declan falls in love. He falls in love without hesitation and without doubt.

Neither Declan nor Ava are aware that fate has inconveniently intertwined their lives forever. Will they be able to survive the aftermath of the truth?’

Interested here’s an excerpt:
‘I start restocking the beer fridge when I get the feeling someone is watching me. I turn slowly to take in the people in the bar and check for anything suspicious. When my sight reached the back of the room, I found the set of eyes that made me stir. Declan. Deep blue-green eyes set just below dark furrowed brows. The piercing in his right brow shone under the low overhead lighting above his table and made me want to take it between my teeth. Our gazes connect and he doesn’t look away. The girl is still sitting on his lap and running her skanky hand up and down his thigh. She has no idea that he’s been staring at me for at least the last thirty seconds. Not being able to handle the stare contest any longer, I smile at him. He doesn’t smile back and it really doesn’t bother me. It probably should, but I have a feeling that it’s not a negative emotion that makes him continue to stare blankly.’
