RED NIGHT by RK Close The Vampire Files Trilogy, #1 Paranormal Romance Release Date: May 10, 2016 Publisher: Limitless Publishing Cover Designer: Deranged Doctor Designs
For five hundred years I have feasted on the blood of the innocent. For centuries I have seduced beautiful victims into my bed. And all this time, I have never gone without…
I am Zachariah…
While enduring endless days as an immortal, only one urge soothes my savage need.
I have consumed countless humans—I have witnessed mountains of corpses piled beneath my feet. But none more significant than the woman I once loved.
My heart was not the only one she captured, but it would be the last…
An inferior creature turned her heart against me—Adam. Such a pathetic identity to be named after the original creation of God, and always besting me in life. But in death—I am king.
I am far more treacherous. I should be feared. I demand to be remembered.
And I am, for being known as the immortal who slayed the woman we both loved, and my rampage continues…
Now in the scorching desert, I find prey well worth the chase…
And my interest in this mortal runs deep. Adam has pursued me over the globe in search of revenge—but his own weaknesses have made him vulnerable. He’s taken to the striking mortal, which means only one thing.
She will be my next target.
But this time, not for the taste of blood. I will take her as my own mate, and neither Adam, or anyone else, will stop me…
Hello! I’m R.K. Close, author of the ‘Vampire Files Trilogy’. ‘Red Night’ is the first book in the series. I write paranormal-romance & urban-fantasy with a hint of darkness and a dash of humor. Creating characters that my readers will fear, fall in love with, despise or cheer for, is what I love most about writing.
Ann Rice gets all the credit for my vampire addiction which started in my early twenties. Like so many others, I fell in love with her vampires first.
Originally from Kentucky, I’ve lived most of my life in Arizona where I met and married my true love. We were late to the game so we knocked out three ankle-biters in quick succession. We often joke that parenthood saved us from ourselves. Now we need to be saved from parenthood. *just kidding* We love our darling spawn.
When I’m not writing, I’m taking care of a busy family, dragging my butt to CrossFit, thinking about my stories or spending time with family and friends. My dream is to sell enough books to hire someone to clean our house and cook our meals. Okay, maybe that’s my family’s dream. I tend to get a little obsessed when I write. Truthfully, I would love the opportunity to pull you into my world of strong independent females, mysterious vampires, noble hunters, hungry werewolves and seductive yet deadly fae. If you like paranormal-romance in a modern-urban setting with plenty of romantic tension, mystery and suspense, then my novels were written for you.
Today I have the author of The Keepers Trilogy on my blog , Rae Rivers , who will be talking to me about her writing and books.
What inspired you to start writing, Rae?
I’ve always had a love of storytelling. At first, it was something I did as a child when I needed to escape into my imaginary world where I had control over everything and could just have fun. As I grew older, the need to tell more stories grew stronger. It’s my calling, my passion, and one of the few things in my life that makes me feel alive with excitement. I love it!
Was becoming a published author important to you?
The older I got and the more I wrote, the more I enjoyed it. I began to wonder if my work was “good enough” to be considered for publication but as I never allowed anyone to read it (not even my husband or mother!) I had no feedback to work with. So when I finally plucked up the courage to submit my Keepers to a publisher and they offered a four book deal, I was thrilled. Slowly, my inner voice became an encouraging “I’ve got this.” I knew I had a lot to learn but they believed in me so that was huge! (And still is! ) So yes, for me being published – along with the incredible feedback from my readers – has been a huge confidence boost which has helped me grow as a person and a writer and turn a hobby into a dream career.
‘The Keepers: Ethan is your latest release and I think the last book in the series. Are you sad to reach the end, or is there going to be more books in the series?
The Keepers: Ethan is the end of the series and it’s with a bittersweet feeling that I wrap up this journey. I’ve worked with these characters for over three years and most of the time, they were at the forefront of my mind – it often felt like I was greeting old friends whenever I started my writing morning. Whilst writing all the books, there was some angst and stress (and sometimes tears too!) but I had the time of my life too. I’m delighted to reach the end of this journey and feel tremendously satisfied with how it all came together in the end, but I do feel a bit sad to say goodbye.
Do you have a special place where you like to write? Do you have a photograph of it to share with us?
I live on a flower farm in the mountains so my surroundings are so inspirational. It’s quiet and peaceful and so perfect for an author. I have a home office which is kitted out with everything I need. It’s sunny and bright in the summer and dark and cosy in the winter. It’s my space, my haven, and I love it. But having said that, I’m also quick to grab my laptop and head for the outdoor patio, couch or even my bed. And with small children, I might even write beside the swimming pool too.
Is your writing process well defined or haphazard? Can you describe it?
I think it’s a little of both. I had an overall outline for the entire series with certain highlights I wanted to reach – and a whole of blank spaces in between. But those blank spaced gave me room to create as I went along and I think the books turned out better because of them. Sometimes I write quickly and end up with a messy scene which I then have to carefully craft into a stronger one. Other times, I take a step back and plan a little more. As I’ve gained more experience, I tend to want to plan a bit more to ensure I’ve covered everything and given my characters and plot all the elements that make a good story.
Paranormal isn’t the only genre you write – you have also written a romantic suspense novel. Which genre appeals most to you as a writer and why is this?
I’m definitely a romance writer at heart but also love action and suspense too. I never thought I’d venture into the Paranormal scene until the day Sienna and her Keepers came to mind. Now I adore the genre as it gives me a lot of freedom to be creative. The rules can be shaped as I want and the possibilities for my “worlds” are endless. And best of all is that I’m able to combine my love of romance and suspense with the paranormal.
Apart from writing do you have any other things you love to do?
Definitely reading, movies and TV series! I enjoy the outdoors like waterskiing, hiking, boating etc. I love travelling – anywhere from a camp site to a fab hotel. I like a balance between socialising with friends and family, nights spent at home with my kids and hubby– and also having time alone.
What writing plans do you have for 2016?
I’m toying with various ideas and mapping out a plot line for another possible series. I’ve opened myself to the fictional world waiting for the story to take hold. For now, I’m wrapped up in Ethan’s release and school holidays but know when things settle down, there’ll be no stopping me. Watch this space!
“Going to Ameera to find Hazel. Stealing the spell … You think you can pull it off?” he asked. She nodded, not trusting herself to speak. Just as she thought he’d kiss her, he reached for her jacket and said, “Then let’s go.”
A portal to another world has opened, unleashing dangerous creatures on earth. A dark witch is out for revenge. The stakes are high, a war inevitable.
One person can stop the madness. Jenna. She’s a Keeper to a powerful hybrid witch but she harbours a secret and if Jenna steps through the portal – seduced by the whispers of her hidden past – she may never return.
Fortunately, she has company … infamous Bennett brother and fiercely protective Keeper, Ethan. Their whip-cracking banter makes them perfect sparring partners in training, but how will they manage when their lives and everything they were born to defend are on the line?
When the battle lines are drawn, will Jenna and Ethan stand side by side – as friends, protectors, lovers … or as traitors?
If you’re a fan of The Keepers series, you will have eagerly anticipated ‘The Keepers: Ethan, I’ve just finished reading and it doesn’t disappoint. All the players assemble for the final apocalyptic battle and there are so many twists and turns it leaves you breathless. Jenna and Ethan circle around each other, the only two singles on the Bennett Wine estate, drawn together by proximity and the dangers they face, the passion is sensual and adds a delicious sizzle to this action packed story. Jenna who we met in ‘The Keepers: Declan’ is kick ass and her independence attracts Ethan, who still bears the guilt of his sister’s demise. Ethan, quieter than his brothers, has a determined, powerful presence that attracts Jenna and makes her heart rule her head. Their journey into Ameera is exciting and informative, and gives the series an important new dimension, which increases the suspense and excitement. Ameera is a dark world, full of lost and often dangerous creatures that live in anarchy, the danger to humanity lies here and Jenna and Ethan have to face it head on. The supernatural displays are vivid and easy to imagine and I couldn’t put this book down until I’d finished. There is a dynamic, romantic ending to this unique series, with memorable characters that I’m sorry to leave. I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Today I have the lovely Christy Newton on my blog talking about the inspiration behind her latest books. I got to know Christy during my first ‘So You Think You Can Write’ contest in 2012 and I’ve read and enjoyed all her books.
Hi! I’m Christy Newton, author of over ten novels. I’m a wife, mother and book lover. Thank you, Jane, for having me on your blog. I have to say I’m a little jealous of where you live. Visiting the UK is a dream of mine. Maybe someday if I can sell enough books. Anyway, I’d like to tell you a little about the inspiration I had for writing my two newest books. The first, Naturally Enchanted, is a paranormal about witches of Mango Cove Island. This book was always inside me—probably from the time I was a little girl and adored the TV show Bewitched. I would even play witches with my Barbies. And if only I could cast a spell on my pesky little brother hehe, sorry Johnny.
When I started writing four years ago, I knew someday I’d write a witch story. When I finished Naturally Enchanted I knew I had not only wrote this for my fans and family, I wrote it for myself. My newest book, Breaking Free, is a young adult romance. Here again, is something from my childhood. I don’t talk a lot about my past, but like Elin, I had an evil stepfather. Having two teens myself now, I wanted to write a book that dealt with the serious issue of abuse that a lot of children have experienced. I also wanted to write about how strong a person is who can overcome that abuse. The one thing every one of my books will have in common is a feel good theme with a happy ending.

Soul mates, forbidden love and secrets from the past that have the power to destroy their future Mystery, deceit and suspense, vivid imagery and great fight scenes, enrich the plot and make this an exciting read. The ending puts you on the edge of your seat and answers the questions about Aubrey and Killian. I can’t wait to see what happens next. A Civil War soldier dies to save his men. Can he find true love to live again?
Sarah Knight has a job she’s good at, a quirky BFF, and a boyfriend who’s bad for her. When Sarah unearths a Civil War artifact on a ghost hunt at Chatham Manor, she brings home more than a souvenir
Lieutenant James “Tanner” Dawson fought for the Union, working as a supernatural liaison for his Major General in a secret Masonic offset called the Brothers of Peril. When he’s hexed by a witch, he learns the only way to save his men is to die himself. But death is not the end. Awakening 150 years later, he knows if he wants to be corporeal again, he has to find true love to break the hex—a task no easier in 21st century than it was in the 19th.
This a ghost story with a difference, full of historical detail, vivacious characters and mystique. The authentic opening scenes grab the readers’ attention. The surprises and momentum keep you hooked throughout enhanced with poignant romance.
‘Haunt My Heart’ is a kaleidoscope of colours. It swings from humour when Sarah fails to observe the expected etiquette at the ghost walk to menace when Sarah’s life is threatened.
Sarah is a geeky heroine who so easy to like. Strong and resourceful, she is a sceptic when it comes to the paranormal and this leads to plenty of humorous scenes. Tanner reminds me of ‘Bill from True Blood’, a man out of his time but a true gentleman who has strong protective traits.
The mystery that surrounds Tanner’s appearance has its roots in the nineteenth century but the evil prevails, when it is manifests in contemporary Fredericksburg. The romance is gentle and builds in a realistic way, the passion when it explodes is red hot and believable.
This story is a fusion of history, paranormal and romance, which makes ‘Haunt My Heart’ a book worth reading.
When I wrote my debut novel I didn’t think past the initial story. I wanted to write about a dragon in the twenty-first century searching for the last dragon egg. His motivation? To save the dragon race and ultimately the human race from domination by evil. I wanted my fantasy/paranormal characters to have a human appearance in our world but also be part of a secret paranormal world, not normally seen by us.
When people started to read my first story most commented on two of the secondary charactersJasmine, an independently minded young woman, destined to be guardian witch and Zane, the street wise wolf shifter.
They were together in several scenes of ‘The Dragon Legacy’ and people wanted to see how their fledgling relationship played out.
Readerswere the main motivation behind ‘The Revenge Masquerade’ , it was great to know I’d created two characters they wanted to know more about. 🙂
Having decided to write Jasmine and Zane’s story, what came next? Defining my characters is important to me but I’d already done this with Jasmine and Zane, as they featured in my first story.
TheSettingwhere my characters travel on their emotional journey is an important part of what motivates me to write a story.
With ‘The Revenge Masquerade’, deciding on the Plot was the last of my motivations. At the end of ‘The Dragon Legacy’, Jasmine is separated from Zane. I wanted to explore what happened to her emotionally in the months that followed. Zane left to act as an ambassador for the infant dragon with the supernatural world, what happened to him? Does his still think about Jasmine and how he treated her, or is he really the player he appears to be?
Lost love, Reunion and facing one’s destiny are all explored in the story. The story starts one year after Zane leaves. Jasmine is in the Lake District with a new companion and strange mystical dreams.Whilst Zane reaches the final stop on his mission – Venice and is confronted with a new evil. Can he save Larna (Lukas’ the dragon lord’s sister)? Should he contact Lukas and risk the safety of the infant dragon Tarriannah? Has he really seen Jasmine in Venice?
After the first couple of chapters I let the characters tell their own stories whilst I buckled up for the ride , peeking through my fingers whenever it got too scary. 🙂
I hope you enjoyed sharing some of my motivations for writing and thoughts about ‘The Revenge Masquerade’. If you want to know what happens next it’s available at the following outlets:
The English Lake District: Just over a year ago in Hallows House’s garden.
Zane shook his body until his fur lay flat against his broad back. His shift into his wolf completed, he padded across the silent garden, eager to be on his way. He paused and looked back at the house. A movement at a downstairs window drew his predatory gaze. He stood transfixed as the artificial light illuminated Jasmine’s titian hair. Jasmine leant against the kitchen window and stared into the moonlit garden. His silvery-eyed stare moved lower and devoured her hourglass figure’s perfection, barely concealed by the emerald robe she wore.
His ears flattened as a shrill whistle assaulted his acute hearing. Jasmine disappeared. Instinctively he edged further away from the house to where the garden merged with the dark hills. He waited. A turquoise streak of light momentarily dazzled him. He followed its progress and recognized the baby dragon as it flew into the room occupied by its guardian, Fleur. Zane assumed Lukas, his friend the dragon lord, was there too. He growled softly, pleased by Lukas’ happiness. Jasmine’s image flashed into his mind. Zane shook his shaggy head–she wasn’t for him.
The shrieking noise quieted and the unmistakable creek of the heavy door alerted him of someone’s approach. His hackles rose and then flattened in recognition of the scent: a mixture of flowers and spice unique to Jasmine. He resisted the urge to shift into his human form. As a wolf, their encounter would remain platonic. His mind and heart warred over the morality of his desires. He couldn’t stay. His mission necessitated he leave immediately. Was it fair to take Jasmine’s heart and leave her alone with needs mere memories wouldn’t satisfy? The wolf ignored his human conscience. Time was short and the instinctive need to brand the flame-haired witch with his mark too strong. He shifted back into his human form.
Zane leant against the jagged stone wall. His naked body barely registered the rough-hewn rock, which imprinted his skin. His abrupt shift into human form didn’t include clothes. The cool night air soothed his fevered body as Jasmine appeared. A faint blush stained her pale skin everywhere his gaze rested.
“I saw your wolf through the window,” Jasmine said, perhaps to explain her presence in the garden.
“I wanted to talk to you.” Zane enclosed her small hand in his. She offered no resistance.
“Just talk?” Her gaze darted away from his erection, taunt against his abdomen. He sighed and pulled her tight against his hardness, enjoying the contact with her soft curves. “This isn’t talking, Zane,” she said, her voice breathless.
In the spirit of the season here’s a snippet from The Revenge Masquerade my latest release…
‘Zane stood motionless. Jasmine stepped into the room, surprised Zane’s protective hands didn’t reach out to stop her. She looked round to make sure the destruction’s instigator wasn’t hiding in plain sight. The room appeared empty except for the body slumped in the middle of the floor. She picked her way over the damaged antique furniture and knelt by the body. She drew a deep breath. She touched an arm visible amid the tangle of threads. The bluish skin was cold and clammy but lacked the stiffness associated with a corpse. She pushed aside the debris covering the body and revealed raven colored hair with turquoise and blue highlights.’
‘Zane Lupus, the wolf shifter who loved and left Jasmine broken-hearted, is in danger. Haunted by nightmares, Jasmine risks her fragile heart and travels to Venice to find her one-time friend and lover, hoping she can save him and rekindle their passion. Abducted by Lorenzo, a passionate dragon, Jasmine is tempted away from her quest to find her wolf. Zane is confronted with what he suspects is an enemy from his past. He tries in vain to warn the dragon lord, Lukas, about the threat to the infant dragon. The horror beneath The Revenge Masquerade is ancient and terrible and determined to capture the infant dragon for its own ends. The Dragon Legacy faces its greatest test. Is Jasmine, empowered by the guardian witch’s snake ring, strong enough to restore the natural balance? Or will the sacrifice she must endure destroy her before she embraces her destiny?
