Their spontaneous fling…Will have unexpected consequences

Unceremoniously dumped by her boyfriend, Laney desperately needs a date to her sister’s wedding. When sexy stranger Gianni Martino steps in as her plus-one, Laney can’t help herself from exploring the explosive chemistry between them! But soon, she discovers who Gianni really is! Escaping to Italy to protect her heart, Laney finds that Gianni is not so easily forgotten…and neither is their fling!

I received a copy of this book from Mills and Boon via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

This story is a fusion of romance tropes, notably fake romance, enemy to lover and pregnancy surprise. I like Laney, even though she is brittle at times. Her family’s critical comparisons make her this way. It’s difficult for her to believe that Gianni likes her the way she is, particularly when she discovers his secret. Their relationship is slow to develop, but the attraction intensifies, accompanied by emotional commitment.

Amazon UK | Amazon (US) | Harlequin

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

Second chance romance is always a favourite, and this one has the added dimension of an amnesia trope, which introduces additional conflicts and endless possibilities for Amal and Manny’s romance. The setting in Somaliland and Ethiopia allows the reader to explore a lesser-known region of Africa through the author’s insightful and vivid descriptions.

This romance has many layers, which draw the reader into the story. Amal and Manny are both successful entrepreneurs. Amal in Africa and Manny globally. They are both visionary and want to help rebuild and sustain their homeland, even though Manny never thought to return until his fate decreed otherwise. They both have romantic souls and deserve their second chance. It reflects cultural differences and issues faced by people of colour, which makes it contemporary and relevant.

The romance is gentle despite its many conflicts, and the ending is satisfying.

Guest PostFinally Seeing Myself In Books By Hana Sheik

There’s a reason I call SECOND CHANCE TO WEAR HIS RING the book of my heart. I have written dozens of manuscripts before it, though none are likely going to see the light of day. When I sat down to write my first chapter of SECOND CHANCE TO WEAR HIS RING more than three years ago today, I knew I wanted to write characters who looked more like me. I wanted to wax poetic about beautiful brown skin, and I wanted to set my story in Somaliland—my other home.

So when Harlequin announced their Harlequin Romance Blitz I never thought the story I’d set in Somaliland and Ethiopia would stand a chance. I kept telling myself it wasn’t “glamourous” enough for the jet-set sparkling love stories in Harlequin Romance. But, of course, I was dead wrong! And I’m happy I was or else I wouldn’t be able to share my book with the world today.

In SECOND CHANCE TO WEAR HIS RING, I lightly touch on how looking different has placed barriers for my black Muslim hero, Mansur to achieving his success. The rest of the book celebrates the beauty of Africa, the history and the people living there today. It also shines a light on some of the continent’s problems, its progresses, and the possibility of its bright future. This last part is why I made my heroine, Amal an architect. I literally wanted her helping build on Africa.

I will pivot now and talk book covers.

More and more I’m seeing romance books with covers of black models, black couples, and black families. It’s also thrilling to see more authors from marginalized backgrounds and communities telling their stories.

Speaking of covers, when I saw the cover of SECOND CHANCE TO WEAR HIS RING, I just about nearly cried. I was happily stunned for the first few minutes after seeing it, and then I showed my sister, and I remember her saying that the model on the cover was gorgeous. I wholeheartedly agree! I still thank the cover gods every day.

Seeing the cover also reminds why I am building a brand writing black love stories, black Muslim romances, and diverse happy-for-nows and happily ever afters. I dying to build a library of romances for the next generation of black, Muslim and POC romance readers, one book at a time. Being a part of this movement to diversify bookshelves is both humbling and triumphant.

I will close this guest post off by sharing four fun facts about SECOND CHANCE TO WEAR HIS RING:

  • It features a black Muslim hero and heroine.
  • It’s set in Hargeisa, Somaliland and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (though mostly Ethiopia).
  • I have only visited Somaliland—but I’m planning a trip to Addis Ababa soon!
  • I love the amnesia trope, even though it was a tricky one to write!

It’s been lovely visiting your blog, Jane! Thank you for having me.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

This second chance romance is set in the romantic Seychelles isles, full of reflection, romance, and passionate reunion.

Freddie is heir to Highgrove, and all that, being Laird entails. Now a successful app developer, Jasmine is the daughter of his family’s housekeeper and his ex-fiancee. Matched by M, the exclusive dating agency, they are both surprised, but Jasmine left him, Cinderella-style, and he doesn’t want his heart stolen again. Jasmine ran away for her mother and his family, but seeing him again, she realises this time she’s here to stay.

Their rekindled romance is sensual, seductive and sentimental. The descriptions of the idyllic honeymoon style setting are lovely, and heartfelt emotion colours their every action.

A lovely fairytale ending for this second chance romance with two characters who deserve their happiness.

Rachael Stewart adores conjuring up stories for the readers of Harlequin Mills & Boon and Deep Desires Press, with tales varying from the heartwarmingly romantic to the wildly erotic.

She’s been writing since she could put pen to paper as the stacks of scrawled on A4 sheets in her loft will attest to, and the lovingly bound short stories that her father would run off at work and proudly share out with his colleagues. Thinking it was a pipe dream to be published one day, she pursued a sensible career in business but she was really play-acting, achieving the appropriate degree and spending many years in the corporate world where she never truly belonged. Always happiest when she was sat at her laptop in the quiet hours tapping out a story or two. And so here she is, a published author, her full-time pleasure, a dream come true.

A Welsh lass at heart, she now lives in Yorkshire with her husband and three children, and if she’s not glued to her laptop, she’s wrapped up in them or enjoying the great outdoors seeking out inspiration.

Billionaire’s Road Trip to Forever Michelle Douglas 4*#Review #MichelleDouglas @MillsandBoon @HarlequinBooks #BookReview #MillsandBoonTrueLove #HarlequinRomance #Romance #RoadTrip #Friendship #Parenting #BillionairesRoadTriptoForever

Running from a wedding…
… to a whole new future!
Bree Allenby’s first stop on her road trip across Australia is to attend the society wedding of her brother’s best friend. When Noah Fitzgerald is dramatically jilted, he needs a quick getaway—so Bree suggests he come with her! Spending her days with a billionaire is not what she was expecting… Not only is their spark of attraction completely new, but it has them both rethinking where they’re going in life!

Amazon UK

I received a copy of this book from Mills and Boon via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

A well-written friend to lover romance where Bree and newly jilted Noah go on a life-changing road trip. Bree’s original reason for the road trip leads to some poignant, thought-provoking moments. The road trip setting is a bonus with great descriptions.

Bree and Noah are likeable characters with emotional baggage, which they open and discard as the journey progresses. A sweet romance about friendship, parenting, and taking a chance on love.

She’s strictly off-limits…
Isn’t she?

Jannes is a professional yachtsman with a playboy reputation. The tabloids devote more columns to his romantic entanglements than his round-the-world races! But scandals spook sponsors, so Jannes makes a proposal of mutual convenience to his commitment-phobe best friend Lara: pose as his girlfriend for PR purposes only and he’ll help keep her chaotic family at bay. It’s perfect… Until the paparazzi leak photos of Lara with a diamond ring on her finger!

Amazon UK

I received a copy of this book from Mills and Boon via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

Friends to lovers romance always put the protagonists in a quandary. Will the physical attraction damage the emotional connection they have as friends? This is the question for Lara and Jannes as they embark on a fake relationship to help Jannes’ career risking their friendship for a PR stunt.

Jannes and Lara have trust issues which make their friendship precious. Their emotional connectivity and the glamorous setting allow their physical attraction to develop. It makes the couple face their emotional issues together in a bid to be both friends and lovers.

The characters are flawed and likeable, the dialogue is witty, and the story explores contemporary issues.

Photographer Gianna is done with men. Retreating to her villa on the shore of Lake Como… she is stunned to find gorgeous Dario renting her house! When Dario is mistaken for her long-gone fiancé, they realise a fake engagement could solve problems for them both. Pretending to be in love should be easy, but what happens when very real feelings start to grow?

Amazon UK

I received a copy of this book from Mills and Boon via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

A lovely romantic story where the couple’s slow-burn attraction deepens into an emotional commitment. The fake engagement trope is well-written with plenty of internal conflicts. The family interference which affects the couple is believable and adds additional external conflicts for their happy ever after.

Gianna and Dario are easy to like you empathise with their problems, which are convincingly written. Tito, the dog, is an engaging character who initiates their first encounter and proves to be a redoubtable matchmaker.

This is a gentle romantic story full of emotion and humour.

For billionaire Whit Martin, Jamie Rutkowski is the one who got away. Now his college girlfriend is back to celebrate their best’s friend’s marriage. As their chemistry reignites into an even greater passion, Whit’s determined that this time their relationship will work. But are they ready to unlock the secrets of their past…if it means a chance at forever?

Amazon UK   Amazon  Mills & Boon Harlequin

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

I like the originality of this story. Whilst the story has the expected glamorous setting, the situation the couple find themselves is unusual. Both have changed since their college romance, and Whit has a story to share that only Jamie can write.

The proximity and memories satisfyingly build chemistry. The issues raised are topical and give the story authenticity. This story takes both protagonists on an emotional journey with romantic interludes and a happy ending.

Barbara Wallace is the best selling author of over two dozen romance and cozy mystery novels.  Her books can be found world-wide, including the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Italy and Australia.

A native New Englander, Barb lives in the suburbs with her husband of thirty-one years. Their only son is married and lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her hard at work at her other job, that of an unappreciated caretaker to two demanding rescue cats. For some reason they seem to think laps are for petting, not laptop computers.

Gorgeous CEO Liam doesn’t want her money… but he does need a stand-in girlfriend! Yet, as they embark on a ‘romantic trip’ to Italy, the lines soon begin to blur. And walking away from their fake relationship is harder than they planned…

Amazon UK

I received a copy of this book from Mills and Boon via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

A second chance romance about two people who shy away from emotional involvement because of their pasts. Both have secrets, but they need each other, and they cannot deny the attraction between them.

Relatable characters and a recognisable glamorous setting contribute to this is a lovely romance. It’s based on a fake relationship but develops into friendship and love. The first book in the Cassaveti Inheritance series is Ava and Liam’s story.

Ava and Liam are easy to empathise both damaged by their past family life. The trust between them realistically matures into love which culminates in a happy ever after. There are new characters to meet and questions to explore in further books in this romantic series.

A VIP assignment…
an unexpected consequence!

Ex-SAS officer Jacob Wolfe’s latest job, as aristocrat Charlotte Pemberton’s bodyguard, is pushing him to his limits. Never one to step over the line, he’s determined to ignore their intense connection. Until a single dance leads to a forbidden kiss… and Jacob is tempted to break all his rules. But their resulting night together has an unexpected consequence…

Amazon UK Amazon

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

Jacob is a successful personal security consultant always strictly professional since he lost someone, important to him. Charlotte keeps under the radar, no scandal no trouble but has she sacrificed herself remaining out of the limelight?

This is a gentle romance which grows through mutual respect and proximity. Both need to heal from past emotional experiences. A passionate encounter forces them to consider the future. The characters are easy to like and relatable and the situations they encounter believable. This is a lovely romance with a positive ending.

While bestselling author Donna Alward was busy studying Austen, Eliot and Shakespeare, she was also losing herself in the breathtaking stories created by romance novelists like LaVyrle Spencer and Judith McNaught.  Several years after completing her degree she decided to write a romance of her own and it was true love! Five years and ten manuscripts later she sold her first book and launched a new career. While her heartwarming stories of love, hope, and homecoming have been translated into several languages, hit bestseller lists and won awards, her very favorite thing is when she hears from happy readers.

A Marquis in Want of a WifeLouise Allen

Ross Vincent, Marquis of Cranford, with his scarred face and formidable disposition knows he’s hardly a catch. But he needs a wife to take care of his motherless son. Shy, scholarly Prudence Scott seems ideal: she has no expectation of love or passion. She’ll care for his baby in return for the protection of his name. Yet seeing Prudence on their wedding day tests Ross’s willpower to not take his new wife to bed…

My Thoughts … 4*

A marriage of convenience against the backdrop of Waterloo makes this an exciting read. Prue is an intelligent woman who makes a youthful mistake. Ross, a widower, gives her way of preserving her reputation. Their relationship becomes convivial and then romantic, but Waterloo intervenes with near-disastrous results for their life together. Prue is a strong character who matures in the face of adversity and her growing love for Ross and his son. Ross has to learn to trust, something which takes him a while and almost loses him everything. The emotional connection in this story is believable, and Prue’s relationship with her friends is relatable.

Awakening His Shy CinderellaSophie Pembroke

Damon knows Rachel’s always prioritised her family’s needs above her own and it’s time for her to step out of her comfort zone! Damon usually steers clear of commitment, but neither can resist indulging in a very temporary affair! Only when the time comes, can he walk away…?

My Thoughts … 5*

I love modern fairytales, especially at this time of year and this one is magical and romantic and has a contemporary edge. It’s easy to recognise the characters, there’s the wicked stepmother, and the two ugly sisters who despite being outwardly glamorous are mean spirited inside. Rachel doesn’t want to cause her father extra stress, but that doesn’t stop her having dreams, including her longtime crush on her best friend’s brother Damon. Damon doesn’t fit in with his family either, and never feels good enough. The attraction, between Rachel and Damon, simmers gently but grows as they acknowledge their emotional response to each other. There’s a fairy godmother who sees what they could be and plenty of evil and magic occurrences as the story plays out. Sensory imagery immerses the reader in this magical tale, and the multi-layered characters are believable. A lovely story to escape with during the festive holidays.

Christmas Under the Northern Lights – Annie O’Neil

After her fiancé’s shocking betrayal, District Nurse Audrey Walsh hopes to escape Christmas on remote Bourtree Island! Instead, she’s met by a gorgeous man in a Santa suit… Dr. Cooper MacAskill! They’re stuck working (and living) together ‘til New Year, both with their demons to face. Except their inconvenient attraction, and the warmth of this island community offers them healing and happiness – if they have the courage to take it!

My Thoughts … 4*

This is an atmospheric festive romance set on a remote Scottish isle. Christmas cheer is the last thing Audrey feels when she discovers her fiance with another woman, weeks before the wedding she paid for. Heartbroken and in need of cash, she takes a District Nurse locum role as she reassesses her life goals. Cooper grew up on the island. Grieving over his grandmother’s death, he feels guilty and wary of the islanders’ reception. The author believably creates the island world with a relatable cast of characters within the community. The romance and spectacle of the Northern Lights engage the readers’ senses and immerse them in the setting. Audrey and Cooper learn more about themselves and each other in this gentle romance with a well researched medical theme. This is a heartwarming, festive medical romance.

Stolen to Wear His Crown – Marcella Bell

Mina has finally achieved her dream of becoming chief scientific advisor of Cyrano when she’s stolen from the interview room! She’s taken directly to the palace chapel where the terms of a secret betrothal mean she must marry the King – immediately.

My Thoughts … 4*

A fictional kingdom, an unusual heroine, and a determined king make this an interesting romance. The world created is pure fantasy but with some realistic elements. Mina is an intelligent but unworldly woman, fixated on her career and just about to achieve her objective. Zayn knows his duty and will never let his personal feelings get in the way of it. There are elements in this story that defy belief, but if you accept them and Zayn’s often autocratic behaviour, this is a good romance with strong characters full of conflict, glamour and the chance of love.
