4*Review:The Viking Princess – Kim Kasch

Adult Read VikingPrincess_KimKasch_Small

Blurb - Coastal

THE VIKING PRINCESS is not your typical Disney princess. This story sizzles. Morgaine LeFey is King Arthur’s half-sister and she has a Viking Prince for her lover–and who needs a Knight to come to your rescue, when you have a Viking?! But England and Scandinavia were at war – so this is one romance that nearly tore two kingdoms apart: They met on a battlefield, poised against each other, but their attraction was more powerful than any sword, stronger than any warrior and more magical than Merlin.

My Review - CoastalThe Viking Princess (The Viking Series Book 1)An adult fairytale inspired by Danish folklore, which adds a different perspective to the English tales of ‘King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table’. Morgaine, the King’s sister, meets her match on the battlefield. Viking Holger discovers she has many secrets and skills, which enthrall him and make him risk all to possess her. The writing style reflects this story’s folk lore origins; there is a sense of a narrator retelling events they have witnessed, which adds to the ambiance and authenticity.

The attraction between the Viking and the Sorceress is immediate and passionate, leading to erotic love scenes, which demonstrate their love and commitment. Merlin, seen through Holger’s eyes is sinister and possessive of Morgaine and Arthur appears easily led by those around him.

The powerful ending paves the way for the next chapter of Morgaine’s story.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Author Interview: Derek Muk

derekmukauthorphotoindex

This Sunday I’m interviewing paranormal and horror author Derek Muk on my blog.
Author Interview

How important is writing in your life?

Writing is very important to me. It’s one of my passions, one of my hobbies, a creative outlet where I can escape from the stresses and routine monotony of life.

You write both horror and paranormal stories; do you have a favourite genre?

I would say my favorite genres to read are horror, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, and general fiction. I also read things from other categories as well. But I like to write in the horror, paranormal, and supernatural genres.

What are the inspirations behind your paranormal story ‘The Haunted Academy’?

The inspiration for “The Haunted Academy” were news articles and stories I came across about how young students, particularly gay, lesbian, and transgender ones, were bullied in school. My story involves a young woman who identifies herself as a lesbian and how she is victimized by school bullies.

The paranormal investigators featured in The Haunted Academy are quirky and interesting. Are they going to appear in any future books?

The paranormal investigators in “The Haunted Academy” are featured in other short stories that I write and will appear in future stories. They are also the main protagonists in my short story collection, The Occult Files of Albert Taylor. More information about that book and my stories can be found at: https://theoccultfilesofalberttaylor.wordpress.com/

Do you have a favourite writing space?

I like to write at cafes and at home.

Do you have a writing process that you can share with us?

I often begin a story with fragments of scenes, characters, and some dialogue. They’re not cohesive in the beginning so I let them brew in my head for a while until they are clearer and until I feel the story is going in a direction that I’m satisfied with. I jot all these ideas down on paper so that if I can’t utilize them from the get go they’ll be saved for some future writing project when the time is right. Sometimes I get ideas for characters by people watching on the subway, at a café, and even from movies and television. I’ll scribble down these ideas in my notebook and flesh them out later.

What sort of books do you like to read?

I would say my favorite genres to read are horror, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, and general fiction. I also read things from other categories as well.

What’s your favourite social media platform? Why do you like it?

My favorite social media platform? Uhmm, I guess that would be Facebook because it allows you to keep in touch with a massive network of people and keeps you up to date with what others are doing. It’s a great networking tool for writers.

What’s next for Derek Muk? Do you have a current work in progress?

I’m currently working on a novella featuring Albert Taylor and his sidekick, Jan, who are the main characters in “The Haunted Academy”. Stay tuned for more details!

Paranormal My Review

Haunted AcademyThere are lots of interesting themes in this short story; paranormal occurrences, the academic ghost hunting team and the mysteries hidden beneath the exterior of an elite school. The appealing characters need further development, to show what motivates their actions and beliefs.

I like the beginning, which sets the scene for the investigation that follows. It highlights teenage bullying and having nowhere to turn. An informal writing style and simple plot makes it easy to read. It’s the type of story teenagers tell each other at sleepovers or round campfires.

What I read, I liked but I wanted more depth and dialogue. This storyline needs more words; more from Erica’s point of view. She is a major player but we only see things from her point of view at the beginning. The ending is suitably horrific.

The Haunted Academy is a quick, easy read and I would like to see more investigations from this academic duo.

Book Spotlight: Choosing Evil – Kristina Rienzi

This week saw the release of Kristina Rienzi’s first book – Choosing Evil  from Midnight Frost Books. Here’s Kristina to tell you a little more about it.

Choosing Evil-small ‘Hey guys!

Thank you so much for stopping by today to check out my debut novel, Choosing Evil! This baby was a labor of love, for sure. And, its tagline, ‘Embrace Your Inner Demon’ has already raised some eyebrows around my small beach town (oops!).

Well, if you’re into the paranormal like I am, it won’t shock you to know the demons in Choosing Evil are not only sexy and bad-ass, but full of emotional baggage and human appeal.

While Choosing Evil is Serafina’s story, her love interest, Damon is a giant part of it. If you like what you read, get ready for the sequel, Breaking Evil, which I’m hoping to release in 2015. Both books are part of The Ensouled Trilogy, which not only pits good against evil, but makes each character, and reader, question what evil really means to them.

I hope you have fun today getting introduced to Choosing Evil, and me! Don’t forget to find me on social media and, of course, sign up for my giveaways below 🙂

Thank you again for helping me celebrate Choosing Evil’s release!’

Choosing Evil-small

Untitled

Serafina Murano is no stranger to the paranormal. All of her life she’s lived harmoniously alongside demons. Damon Serpe is a conflicted demon on a mission. Unexpectedly, they collide into each other’s lives and are inexorably drawn to one another.

Dark deadly secrets, gut wrenching betrayal, and elusive questions haunt her and have her entire life. Instinctively, Serafina realizes Damon holds the key to her understanding. If she trusts him, can he help decipher her recurring nightmares and unravel the mysteries surrounding her?

On the eve of her thirtieth birthday, she must select her path and make a difficult choice. One which will change her, and perhaps the world, forever.

Will Serafina embrace the truth and face her evil?

Would you?

4* Review: A Game With Conjured Dice Mac Rome

I was asked to review this story by Mac Rome a fellow author at Crimson Frost Books. Here’s what it’s about:

A little girl whose family has been split up by divorce is led by a ghost to some dice with the power to warp the personal realities of those who roll them. Using them to make herself a teenager, and her teenage sister a little girl, she starts a chase to bring her home and set things right. Then, as her mom begins to understand the dice’ s potential, she comes up with a plan to get back at the trophy wife who stole her husband. But, when she learns the dice’ s true origins, which are linked to tragedy and death, the mom questions what to do next.

My Review

A Game With Conjured Dice’ s plot is a clever mix of quirky fantasy and poignant human tragedy.

The magical elements enhance the story’s mystery and suspense and touch ordinary lives with pure supernatural fantasy. There are ghosts, paranormal forces, secrets and magical dice.

Jennifer the mother of the two girls whose lives are touched by the dice faces a moral dilemma when she realises their power. Will she choose personal gain or the greater good?

The fast paced plot flows well and subtly reveals connections between the past and present as it pulls all the threads together to make a happy ending. If you enjoy urban fantasy with a touch of the comic book super-heroine this mystical story is for you.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

conjured_dice-mediumExcerpt:

Lindsay looked at her kid sister. “So, whatcha wanna do?”

“I wanna be big like you. I wish I was big like you.”

Lindsay chuckled. “You will be eventually. You heard Mom. So, what do you want to play?”

“I want to play Magic Dice. It won’t take long. You can’t play too long.”

“Okay.” Lindsay looked around. “Where do we play?” “Here on the floor.” Mia plopped into a sitting position on the hardwood floor. “You sit with me.”

“Okay.” Lindsay sat. “I’ve never heard of this game. How do you play?”

“We each take a dice.”

“A die,” Lindsay corrected. “One is a die, two are dice.”

“Oh.” The correction didn’t seem to bother Mia. “So, we each get a die. I get the big one so I get bigger. You get the small one so you get smaller.”

Lindsay smiled at her sister’s make-believe game. “But I don’t want to be smaller.”

“You have to roll both dice for the magic to work.” Mia’s green eyes were imploring.

Lindsay shrugged. “Give me my die.” She looked at both dice, tucking a strand of brown hair behind her ear. Her die was noticeably smaller than Mia’s. The dice looked handmade, and very old. “Where did you get these?”

“I found them digging in my garden.” Mia’s wavy blonde hair bounced around her head.

“They look it. Now what?”

“Now we just roll the dice,” Mia said.

Lindsay nodded. “Let’s roll.”

The two girls each rolled a one. “Snake eyes,” Lindsay clapped.

Mia shook her head. “We need to roll again. That’s not enough.”

Lindsay still didn’t understand this game, but went along. This time, Lindsay rolled a three and Mia a six.

Mia looked up at Lindsay. “That’s better. We can go again. Do you want to?”

“Why not?” They rolled again. This time, Lindsay rolled a two and Mia a one.

Lindsay tilted her head. “One more time?”

“Really?” Mia seemed genuinely surprised. “You’d let me be that big?”

“Sure.” Lindsay nodded. “Let’s roll.”

Mia rolled a three. Then Lindsay tossed a four.

Lindsay bounced once as she sat. “Wanna go again?”

Mia shook her head. “We can’t. You might get too little.” The little girl got up and kissed her big sister on the cheek. “Thanks, little sis.”

Lindsay smiled. “You’re welcome, big sis.”

Mia grabbed the dice and bounced out of the room.

Lindsay chuckled, then yawned. That hadn’t been too bad. Lindsay found herself getting very sleepy.

A few minutes later, Jennifer called up the stairs, saying dinner was ready. Lindsay put on her flip-flops. She staggered downstairs, eating very little while Mia scarfed down thirds.

As she went back upstairs, Lindsay’s flip-flops slipped off as she reached the top step. They seemed too big, and her form-fitting jeans seemed loose. So sleepy she couldn’t think straight, Lindsay collapsed onto bed, barely getting the covers over her before she passed out.

Early Saturday morning, Lindsay heard someone at her closet. She looked over groggily. “Hmm?”

“It’s just me. I’m just borrowing some clothes.”

The figure Lindsay saw through her sleep was tall and slim. She held up a t-shirt and some jeans.

“Hmm.” The figure glanced at her feet. “A little small, but it’ll have to do. And my feet are so big. I’ll have to make the flip-flops work ‘til I can figure out a replacement.”

The figure leaned down and kissed a sleepy Lindsay’s right cheek. “I love you, little sis. Thanks.”

Through the haze of her sleepiness, Lindsay knew the kiss. “Luv you, Mia.” She went back to sleep.
