4* Review: Without You – Lindsay Detwiler

Winter Blurb

On the surface, Jenna Landsen has it all… She’s smart, beautiful, confident, and married to Camden Landsen, who happens to be drop dead sexy and just as successful. But after five long years, all the success in the world hasn’t brought the romantic spark back into her marriage. Jenna fears it never will. When life gives you lemons, open a bakery and name it Vi’s… Violet Streiff made the exact mistake her mother warned against—she fell in love with Liam Coffman, a charming finance major. When he left her heartbroken to further his career, Violet drowned her sorrows by opening a bakery, and now relies on Bob, her eighteen-pound cat, for warmth at night instead of a sexy man. To find love, sometimes you first have to discover yourself… When Jenna’s job offers an extended trip to New York, she packs her bags and takes a two-month vacation from life. The chance of her marriage surviving looks grim, until the surprise of a lifetime throws a wrench in her plans to stay in the Big Apple for good. You can bend the rules—but sooner or later they’ll break… When Violet meets a gloomy but totally drool-worthy guy named Camden in her shop, she’s sure her luck has changed. There’s no denying the chemistry, but he’s married, and that’s a major problem. Violet isn’t a homewrecker. Still, staying away from Camden proves nearly impossible. That is, until his wife comes home. Two women. Two men. Double the chance to find love in the most unexpected places—or double the chance for disaster.

Winter My Review

Without You
This is a story about what happens after the ‘happy ever after’. Five years down the line are you still in love? Is there still heart stopping romance, or are you both just going through the motions? This is the situation Jenna finds herself in and even though Camden is still the man of her dreams, isn’t he? The magic is gone, or too difficult to find.
Jenna is a flawed character but she comes across as realistic because of this. Maybe she blames Camden too easily, for all their problems but if we’re honest isn’t that what we do? It’s easier to find fault with our partner, than to look inwards, for the cause of our emotional problems.
Camden loves his wife and she should know this, right? He shouldn’t have to tell her, or show her, it’s a given. It’s not until Jenna leaves on a business trip and stays away, he wakes up and realises his perfect marriage, is on the rocks.
The story portrays the couple’s emotions sensitively, the realism is undeniable but sometimes the pacing is a little slow.
Vi’s story, adds an interesting dynamic to this tale of marital discord. She is well meaning and therefore instantly likeable. However her need to find the man of her dreams may prove to be more destructive than Jenna’s selfishness.
The story links all the characters and story-lines together in a believable way and there are some nice plot twists.
Overall I enjoyed this story and the ending, although a little rushed after the earlier slower pacing, is romantic and satisfying.

But just how far is he willing to take this charade in order to get closer to Mia? And what happens if Mia’s Blind Date #1 turns out to be The One?Buy Links 3Amazon UK

My Review 2

Try Me On for Size‘Try Me On for Size’ scores highly on the originality scale; Bryn and Mia, struggling lingerie shop owners, desperate to stay afloat, decide to diversify into the sex toys market. To attract quality clientele they need a bespoke product. Decision made. They need the ‘real’ thing and that’s when the fun starts.

Mia and Bryn, friends since school, always look out for each other. Single Mia is guilt tripped by her friend to test out the models. Serendipity plays a major role in Mia and Oliver’s meeting. The resultant heat, generated when they connect, is more personal than professional. Mia’s expectations of love are unrealistic and Oliver is not what he seems, which makes their romantic journey full of potholes.

The fast paced, story takes lots of unpredictable turns and makes entertaining reading. Alongside the humorous, naughty scenes are poignant interludes and contrary to the title, romance. The setting for the story is atmospheric and enhances the story’s authenticity. The characters are easy to visualise and either like or hate, depending on their motivation.

I enjoyed reading this unique, adult story.

I received a copy of this book from the author via Simon and Schuster in return for an honest review.

My Review

Effortless‘Effortless’ seems an unlikely title for the final story in the ‘Breathless series’. Alastair’s and Lia’s relationship appears anything but effortless. Lia struggles with his increasingly devious ex lovers and Alastair refuses to accept loving Lia is strength rather than a weakness.

This third book, concentrates on the internal emotions between Alastair and Lia and less on the external setting of the TV news programme and Alastair’s international multimedia corporation. As the final book in the series it’s fine but it would be difficult to understand all the players, if you haven’t read books 1 & 2.

The emotional upheaval and sexual dependence of Lia and Alastair is dominant and angst ridden throughout the story. This isn’t an easy book to read but it does give the story a realistic edge that makes it worth reading.

Lia appears to be losing her independence as this story progresses and you can understand why. Thankfully her strong character returns, as she fights for her man and their love against hostile outside forces, which number the paparazzi, shameless ex girlfriends and Alastair’s tendency to press the self destruct button, whenever he feels life is too good and he doesn’t deserve it.

‘Effortless’ and the whole ‘Breathless’ series is a well written exploration of emotional and sexual dependence and the borderline between love and obsession. The ending is charmingly romantic and a lovely contrast to some of the story’s darker themes.

I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

Author Interview: Jennifer De Cuir

Author Interview

72550559781440588686Today I’m welcoming Jennifer De Cuir to my blog. Jennifer’s fourth novel Trapped in Tourist Town was released on 5 January and it’s a wonderful read.

 Here’s my 5* review..

Now to find out a little more about Jennifer.

Did you always want to be a writer? Can you tell us what influenced your career choice?

I’ve always been writing. Ever since I used to fill up notebooks from about sixth grade on. Actually having a book published probably wasn’t on my radar until my early 20’s.

What would you like your potential readers to know about Jennifer De Cuir?

I’m a terrible introvert in person, but can’t seem to shut up on social media. Ha! Go figure.

What inspired you to write your latest novel – ‘Trapped in Tourist Town”?

Believe it or not, this was actually the first novel in my Scallop Shores series. I always meant to tell Cady’s story first. Harlequin American Romance shot it down and it took me years to get up the nerve to give it a good rewrite.

So glad you did it’s a lovely story.

Do your wonderful characters and stories evolve purely from imagination, or are they based on people you have met and places you have been?

My characters come to me and ask for their story to be told (well, sometimes they ask, sometimes they demand). So far all the stories in the SS series are based on my hometown on the coast of Maine.

What is your favourite time of day to write?

I am a late night WEENIE! Usually can’t stay awake much past nine PM. So my favourite time of day to write is early morning. Bonus points if I am the first one up and the house is eerily silent.

Tell us a little about ‘Trapped in Tourist Town’.

Trapped is about Cady, a small town girl with dreams of big adventures in the city. Until she meets Burke, a travel journalist from the city, who helps her learn to appreciate the benefits of family, community and a chance at happily ever after without ever leaving home.

What writing tips helped you to become a published author?

Don’t give up. Write every day. Join a local chapter of RWA (or its equivalent) to connect with fellow writers (it gets very lonely sitting at that computer every day!)

I really enjoyed reading ‘Five of Hearts’. What other books have you written?

The first book in the Scallop Shores series is Drawn to Jonah and then after Five of Hearts came Wynter’s Journey. I’m currently writing the last book in the series, Always My Hero.

Where can your readers connect with you on social media?

I’m an obsessive checker of Facebook.
Still learning the ropes on Twitter
I am a very visual person and LOVE to be able to share some of how I see my Scallop Shores world on Pinterest

When you’re not writing do you enjoy reading? What’s your favourite type of story?

I wouldn’t be much of a writer if I didn’t love to read. 😉 I make it a point to be early everywhere I go, just so I have a chance to sit and read for a few minutes here and there, throughout my day.
My favourite indulgence is time travel romance, or rereading The Hobbit or the Harry Potter series (when I can wrestle a book away from my 10 year old).

Read my  5* Review and spotlight, to find out about book 4 ‘Trapped in Tourist Town’.

Here some details on Jennifer’s first three books in the Scallop Shores series.

5* Review – Trapped in Tourist Town (Scallop Shores) Jennifer De Cuir

9781440588686

UntitledCady has been saving up all her life to move out of her small town and start a new, exciting, life in the city. She just needs a little extra cash to get her there. So when travel reporter, Burke Sanders, arrives to do a series of articles about her little tourist map dot, Cady offers to show him the sights from a local’s perspective, if he will hire her on as an assistant. Burke is from the city, so when it’s clear their working relationship is getting a lot more complicated, Cady starts to imagine what it would be like for the two of them to ride off into the sunset together. The only problem is that Burke falls hard for Cady AND for Scallop Shores, and this world-weary traveler has decided he can definitely see himself living in this small town and trading journalism for his real passion — writing a horror novel. Burke only has a few months to convince Cady that all the fun and excitement she could ever want is already right in front of her, along with a love that will last a lifetime.

My Review 2Trapped in Tourist TownThis is my second visit to Scallop Shores and again, the realistic, memorable characters and friendly small town setting make absorbing reading. This is a story about seeing what you have from a new perspective.

Well loved by all the town’s residents Cady is tired of living under the eagle glare of a small community and longs for the anonymity of the big city. She isn’t sure what she wants when she gets there but is determined she will.

Burke has a dream job. As a travel writer he spends his life in breathtaking places. His visit to Scallop Shores is a departure from the norm. Surprised by the variety of small town life Burke discovers a sense of family he’s never experienced. The sense of community is very much in evidence when danger threatens the townsfolk.

This is such an atmospheric story; you can smell the coffee brewing in the bakery, taste the mouth watering pastries as the coastal air blows against you.

There is plenty of sizzle between Cady and Burke, interwoven with lovely romance. Cady makes Burke see New York as he never has. Can he recapture the magic of Scallop shores for her, or is their love over before it begins?

It’s a sweetly romantic tale with a clever plot and lots of unexpected adventure.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

5* Review Five of Hearts (Scallops Shores)

Author Bio7255055Jennifer DeCuir writes small town contemporary romances while wrangling two kids, a husband, and three neurotic pets. She lives in the Pacific Northwest, where she can never get enough sunshine or caffeine. Her Scallop Shores series, published by Crimson Romance, is based on her hometown of York, Maine. When she isn’t writing or reading, she is probably adding to her obsessively huge yarn stash and wondering what gifts she’s going to crochet for Christmas this year.

chasing Reese – Book Teaser Trailer:

Blurb -2Everything in life is not permanent but it was perfect. Catalina Pardo had a career in journalism most people could only dream of, a hot, sexy fiancé to call her own and a brilliant future ahead of her. When tragedy struck, the life she once knew fell apart. Four years later, traumatized by the events that ultimately changed her existence, Catalina sets herself on a punishing work schedule, preventing herself from facing the demons of her grief-stricken past. Emotionally shut down, she’s alive but not living because everyone she ever loved leaves her.

Fate intervenes in Catalina’s life in the form of a last minute assignment to a snowy mountain lodge in Whistler, B.C. Sent there to cover the life of the infamous Jackson Reese; an Olympic Snowboarding Champion, she is faced with many challenges bringing to surface the raw emotions of her past. Compelled to work alongside Stryder Martynus, an award winning photographer brought in to document the Reese press tour, tensions and denial run high forcing Catalina to accept the past and face the present with zero regrets.

*Adult Contemporary Romance – Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen (18+).*

My Review

chasing Reese. (SAFELIGHT, #1)‘Chasing Reese’ is an engaging mix of realistic contemporary dialogue and vivid poignant description; you experience every emotion as the story unfolds. The pacing is gentle which is unusual for this type of story but it works. It’s like watching real life. There’s a slow burn of passion and some repetition as different characters interact and learn what’s happening but it gives the story a uniqueness and honesty, which is absorbing and refreshing.

Orphaned and beset by tragedy, Catalina avoids becoming a clichéd character through her emotional strength and inherent sweet nature. She isn’t afraid to hold onto to those who love her even though they remind her of her painful loss. There is nice first meeting between Stryder and Catalina, dramatically ironic because she doesn’t find out about it until much later. I loved Cat’s grounded personality, she has a runaway mouth but it makes her real and imaginable. There is a sensitively written panic attack scene in the SUV in the blizzard, which underlines the story’s poignant realism.

Focusing on the contemporary obsession with addiction, celebrity and invasive journalism ‘chasing Reese shows how Jackson is affected by it all. It’s not the love triangle you imagine. Cat and Jax bond from their first meeting. His flirty behaviour is never a threat to Cat and they become confidantes. Her reactions to ace photographer Stryder threaten her tenuous link with lost love Blake. Stryder makes her feel alive and needy in a purely feminine way, something she resists at all costs, she isn’t ready.

I like the intimate style of ‘chasing Reese’, sharing of this story from Cat’s, Stryder’s and Jax’s points of view. It’s like being a fly on the wall, with a sixth sense. You not only see, hear and feel the action but know how it makes them feel too.
Hot romance with an inherent sweetness, enhanced with deliciously, vivid sensuality, gives it a fairytale quality, a perfect contrast to the human fragility the story uncovers.

The shocking impact of the final scenes makes you want to find out what happens next.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Teaser 1

Excerpt - 1I grab Catalina by her shoulders and push her against the door of our shared suite, my arms pinning her in place. My heart is racing a mile a minute with my sudden display of aggression. Catalina gasps loudly when I bring my mouth to the soft, silken skin of her neck. I kiss her gently, feeling her pulse throbbing against my lips.

“Don’t make fun of me, Pardo. It’s not nice,” I whisper, my nose trailing up this delectable territory of hers. I inhale her delicious scent without shame or regard. “God, you smell like candy.”

Gently removing my lips from her delicate skin I raise my head, my eyes beseeching hers. Removing one hand from the wall, I allow it to caress the skin of her jaw, my thumb tracing circles on the low of her cheek.

Catalina’s shuddered breaths fuel me further. I move in closer and feel the rising and falling of her chest with each breath she takes. Ripples of desire roll through me, my cock twitching in my pants. She looks at me, drunk with lust, and that gives me all the reassurance I need. I would never pull this stunt on just any woman because it’s the quickest way to get kicked in the balls. But my need for Catalina goes beyond all reason.

Inching closer, my nose collides with hers. Her whole body tenses, and a low moan escapes from her throat. When Catalina closes her eyes, I let out a long-drawn breath.

“You’re unraveling me, Catalina.”

Catalina nods and lets out a sigh, her breath caressing my lips. She replies softly, “And you’re breaking me.”

Author Bio -110649587_512526455551125_6965858920922217337_nI love to read stories about loss, heartache and redemption so it didn’t shock me when I ended up writing stories of my own revolving around those themes. I write with my heart, using my life experiences and emotions to dictate the tone and path in which my fictional characters embark. I believe in the power of friendship and to always have hope because life is always full of pleasant surprises. If you were to ask me if I consider myself an author, I would tell you no, I am not. I’m just a girl who loves to write a good story that makes you consider life choices and the darkness that envelopes a broken heart. My stories are about loss, friendship, hope and love.

I hope to continue writing more books in the not so distant future. It could be said that writing keeps me sane and brings a smile to my face. When I’m not writing Adult Contemporary Romance novels, I’m enjoying a quiet life with my family on Long Island New York.
