I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

I reviewed the first book in the series Withstanding the Enemy as an audiobook, but I have enjoyed reading the second in the series Within the Shadows. This book picks up on the cliffhanger at the end of the first book. It’s a progression, so it’s best to read book one first.

Emma’s traumatic life continues with the introduction of someone from her past. This book focuses on Emma’s internal struggle, as she faces her fears, and emerges stronger. A new romantic focus balances the recurring theme of menace, which makes this a suspenseful read.

This is an edgy story with sensual romance. It reflects Emma’s world well and leaves you wanting to know what happens next.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts….

This story captures the reader’s attention from the beginning and holds it across the desert and ocean.

Rafe forced out of his home at a young age into a life of danger and loneliness. Scarred emotionally, and physically his world-weary attitude is disturbed by the appearance of Cleo. Cleo needs a protector. Unwittingly embroiled in her father’s crimes, she needs to escape to Cairo. A less than perfect childhood lets Cleo and Rafe break through the barriers the other employs to the vulnerable individual hidden from the world. Amusing dialogue and simmering passion arc between Cleo and Rafe like an electrical storm.

The historical setting is unusual and well researched. The desert journey and ocean crossing allow the couple to get to know each other well, and their love to grow despite the internal conflict and external dangers.

This is a lovely historical romance with relatable characters and an absorbing historical background.

Lara Temple writes strong and sensual Regency romances about complex individuals who give no quarter but do so with plenty of passion. Robyn Chase is giving talks on her self-help book, No More Toxic Relationships – 7 Years, 7 Lessons. She’s finding it awkward being a relationship guru when her own boyfriend is avoiding her.

My Thoughts…

Moving to Mallorca is a dream come to true for many, but what happens if the reality, is not what you imagined? Ellen ponders the wisdom of moving and wonders about her marriage to George in retirement. Salva is a private investigator but failed to notice his girlfriend’s infidelity. When his family invade his small apartment after a scam life is anything but ideal. Robyn writes about overcoming toxic relationships and positivity, so why can’t she find her happy place?

The characters are relatable and vibrant. The inclusive writing style uses sensory imagery well. There’s a balance of humour, mystery, poignancy and romance in this lively story, good holiday reading.

Killing The Story Joan Livingston 4*#Review @joanlivingston @darkstrokedark The Isabel Long Mystery Series @rararesources #cozymystery #murdermystery #coldcase #BookReview #BlogTour #KillingTheStory

An accidental death that was no accident…

For the record, Estelle Crane, the gutsy editor of The Observer newspaper, died after a hard fall on ice. But years later, her son discovers a cryptic note hinting her death might not have been an accident after all.

Was Estelle pursuing a big story that put her life in danger?

That’s what Isabel Long — along with her 93-year-old mother, Maria, her ‘Watson’ — agrees to investigate in Dillard, a town whose best days are in the past.

A former journalist, Isabel follows leads and interviews sources, new and familiar. She quickly finds a formidable threat in Police Chief James Hawthorne, who makes it clear Isabel is not welcome in his town — and who warns her against poking her nose into Estelle’s death.

Of course, that’s after Isabel has discovered the chief’s questionable policing and a troubled history with Estelle that goes way back.

Killing the story means dropping it because there aren’t enough facts to back it up. But Isabel won’t make that mistake. She’ll see this one through to the very end.

Can she uncover the plot that led to Estelle’s murder?

Killing the Story is the fourth in the popular Isabel Long Mystery Series.

Amazon UK Amazon

I received a copy of this book from Darkstroke Books and the author in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

Even though this is the fourth book, in the Isabel Long Mystery series it’s the first I’ve read, and there’s sufficient backstory for this to read as a standalone. Isabel, a former journalist, specialises in solving cold cases, in the area of North Massachusetts where she lives. Her fourth case concerns a former Editor of a small-town paper.

The characters are quirky, and the small-town dynamic is believable. The plot has twists and false leads. The investigative team comprises Isabel and her mother, and these two give the story a unique perspective.

If you enjoy cosy and murder mystery this unusual, and original series should appeal to you.

Jaon Livingstone

Joan Livingston is the author of novels for adult and young readers. Killing the Story, published by Darkstroke Books, is the fourth in her Isabel Long Mystery Series, featuring a longtime journalist who becomes an amateur P.I. solving cold cases in rural New England.

She draws upon her own experience as a longtime journalist in Massachusetts and New Mexico to create Isabel Long, a sassy, savvy widow who uses the skills she acquired in the business to solve what appears to be impossible cases. She also relies on her deep knowledge of rural Western Massachusetts, where she lives, to create realistic characters and settings — from country bars (where Isabel works part-time) to a general store’s backroom where gossipy old men meet.

She credits her mother, Algerina — the inspiration for Maria, Isabel Long’s ‘Watson’ — for instilling in her a love of reading and the power of the written word.

The Cure Glenn Cooper #Extract @GlennCooper @AriesFiction #BlogTour #BookReview #medical#thriller #TheCure #FridayReads

Extract from The Cure by Glenn Cooper

Theresa Gonzalez, the Baltimore Medical x-ray tech, was in a middle seat in coach silently cursing. She had been up since before dawn to catch an early flight from BWI to Miami. As the morning progressed, her throat was getting scratchy and she was starting to feel chesty.

She wound up saying, rather than thinking one of her “damn-its” and the elderly man in the window seat said, “Excuse me, did you say something?”

“I apologize,” she said, hacking into a tissue. “I’m going on vacation and I think I’m catching a cold.”

The man was pleasant enough. “Don’t you hate it when that happens?”

“I think I know who coughed on me.”

“Well I hope you won’t do the same to me,” he said cheerfully.

“I’ll be careful.”

“Are you staying in Miami?” he asked.

“I’m boarding a cruise there.”

“That’s wonderful. Where to?”

“The Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, and St. Thomas. I can’t wait.”

She coughed again but this time she was a little slow with her tissue. He must have felt some spray land on his forearm because he dabbed at it with a napkin.

“I apologize,” she repeated.

The man’s smile faded. He put the armrest down and pressed himself against the window.

The stewardess who handed Gonzalez a can of soda and a bag of chips would fly on to Dallas later in the day to attend a training seminar with flight attendants from twenty states.

That night, the window-seat passenger had dinner in Coral Gables with his three elementary-school grandkids, his daughter, a pharmaceutical sales rep with a busy schedule for the next day, and his son-in-law, an accountant who had an early tee-time in a foursome that included a Delta pilot who would fly to London Gatwick in the evening.

Terry Gonzalez, though a little feverish, had her first on-board meal with eleven randomly assigned passengers from five states, coughing her way through the appetizers and entrée before excusing herself. In the morning she was feeling too ill to leave her cabin, but the rest of her dinner companions disembarked at their first port-of-call in Nassau where some of them had lunch at a café next to a table of Japanese tourists on their next-to-last day of holiday. One couple stopped a Swede on the street on his final day of a business trip to see if he knew how to get to the pirate museum. Another couple asked an Italian schoolteacher to take their photo.

And so it began.

If you catch it, you forget everything. Your only hope is the cure…

He wanted to cure Alzheimer’s Disease…

Single parent and neurologist Dr. Jamie Abbott makes a key contribution to treating Alzheimer’s Disease. But the principal investigator short-circuits the study safeguards, releasing a highly contagious virus that wipes the host’s memories. His daughter is one of the first victims.

As the virus spreads and civil order breaks down, Jamie embarks on a perilous cross-country journey. He needs to reach Dr. Mandy Alexander. She has the other half of a potential cure.

If he fails, he’ll leave most of mankind to the oblivion of total amnesia.

Three D. A. Mishani 4*#Review #Audiobook #PsychologicalThriller #Israel #Translator Jessica Cohen #Narrator LucyPaterson @HachetteAudioUK #DAMishani @riverrunbooks @QuercusBooks

Three tells the stories of three women: Orna, a divorced single-mother looking for a new relationship; Emilia, a Latvian immigrant on a spiritual search; and Ella, married and mother of three, returning to University to write her thesis. All of them will meet the same man. His name is Gil. He won’t tell them the whole truth about himself – but they don’t tell him everything either.

Tense, twisted and surprising, Three is a daring new form of psychological thriller. It is a declaration of war against the normalisation of death and violence. Slowly but surely, you see the danger each woman walks into. What you won’t see is the trap being laid – until it snaps shut.

Audible UK Amazon UK

I received a copy of this book from Hachette Audio UK via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

This story works well, as an audiobook, the writing style is very descriptive and detailed. Told from the viewpoints of three women all with secrets and less than perfect lives it develops into an addictive thriller and you empathise with the victims.

The reader gets to know the three women intimately, but little is known about the antagonist, only what he chooses to share. The conclusion of the first part is shocking. The second part begins and appears to have little connection to what precedes it. When the common link emerges, the reader knows what will happen next, but not how or when increasing the intensity and suspensefulness.

The narrator voices the characters well, although some of the accents are confusing. The setting in Israel gives the story its uniqueness, and the translation captures the story’s essence. The plot twists are well-written, and there is a satisfying end to the story.

The vulnerability of the victims and the underlying menace of the seemingly ordinary antagonist make this a chilling and compulsive audiobook.

Amazon UK Kobo

I received a copy of this book from Canelo via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Thoughts…

This author is always good for romance, storytelling and travel. This book has all of these, but this is more than a lighthearted romantic travelogue. Lucy is a dedicated doctor working in war-torn areas of the world. The beginning sets the scene for her recent life.

Life in Italy is idyllic but conflicted for Lucy, the social inequality of healthcare disturbs her, as does her role in it. The romance with a rich reclusive man is intriguing and realistic. Vivid imagery and first-hand knowledge describe the setting, which is a sensory delight.

The perfect Summer escapist read, especially as I am writing this review amid rain and thunder.

T.A.Wiiliams

I’m a man. And a pretty old man as well. I did languages at university a long time ago and then lived and worked in France and Switzerland before going to Italy for seven years as a teacher of English. My Italian wife and I then came back to the UK with our little daughter (now long-since grown up) where I ran a big English language school for many years. We now live in a sleepy little village in Devonshire. I’ve been writing almost all my life but it was only seven years ago that I finally managed to find a publisher who liked my work enough to offer me my first contract.

The fact that I am now writing romantic comedy is something I still find hard to explain. My early books were thrillers and historical novels. Maybe it’s because there are so many horrible things happening in the world today that I feel I need to do my best to provide something to cheer my readers up. My books provide escapism to some gorgeous locations, even if travel to them is currently difficult.

My Thoughts…

Starcross Manor is the next chapter in the Love Heart Lane series focuses on property development in Heartcross. Julia runs a local bed and breakfast and is looking to expand. The appearance of Flynn, a successful property developer, is worrying. His proposal to create a luxury hotel complex at the manor is troubling for the villagers and particularly for Julia.

This is an engaging story with realistic characters and strong female protagonists. The cast of characters is rich and vividly written, adding to the story’s authenticity. It’s easy to escape into this rural world and care what happens to the characters.
