3* Review : Beautiful Revenge – JL Morris

cover52633-medium

Untitled

Heaven is a place on Earth…

Well, kind of. Kaarl is a Demon who changed his ways, left Hell behind him and now works on Earth to save the souls Lucifer had sent him to claim. In Los Angeles he has wealth and power and in Heaven he has the chance for a new start. Being a Demon freshman in a university built exclusively for Angels has its challenges but other than that things are looking promising…

With Kaarl lost to the other side, Lucifer has found another way to prey on Humanity. He sends his daughter, Persephone, along with the terrifying Four Horsemen of Apocalypse to tear the Mortal world apart and bring it to the brink of starvation. While the Horsemen are forcing the Mortals to sin to survive, reaping countless souls in the process, Persephone is forcing her way in to Kaarl’s heart with her sights set firmly on revenge.

Faced with Lucifer’s wrath, Persephone’s schemes and the seemingly unstoppable Horsemen, Kaarl is running out of options and the Mortal realm is running out of time. The past he has been so desperate to bury may hold his only chance at the saving the realm he now calls home…

My Review 2Beautiful Revenge
The description of this novel attracted me; even though it was the second book in the series and I hadn’t read book one. Interesting, well written characters with great pacing and vivid imagery but it didn’t hold my interest like I expected. There was something missing for me, maybe because I’ve read lots of apocalyptic fiction. Kaarl, Gabriel and the Twins were believable characters but they were too predictable, I like quirky, mercurial characters in this type of story.
If you like urban fantasy it’s worth a read but I would definitely suggest you read the first book in the series ‘Selfish Beings’ before you read this.
I received a copy of this book from Carina UK via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

My Review -1

We've Always Got New York ‘We’ve Always Got New York’ is an excellent second book in the ‘What Happens to Men?’ series. All the character building and relationships developed in the first book, ‘What Happens to Men When They Move to Manhattan.’ makes this story so much easier to get into. Amalia and Olivia’s tell the story and many of the characters from the first book make welcome return appearances.
Book one ended with Amalia’s departure and book two begins with her return. She expects everything to be the same but finds her friends have moved on and not always in ways she likes. This story has realistic characters and scenarios, plus an in-depth knowledge of New York and its young adults, which make ordinary life events interesting and worth reading.
The story focuses on Amalia and Olivia whose love lives are complex and by the end of this story at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. Cassandra seems to have undergone a personality change and is mysterious by her absence from Amalia’s life. Maybe book three will provide the answers? The men are central to the story but find they are dealing with women who are no longer innocent but determined to have life and love on their own terms, which is a pleasing development from book one.
This story’s characters pull you in and make you want to know what happens next.
I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

The Dragon Legacy Series – Jane Hunt – Last Sunday Snippet of 2014 –

Sunday Snippet

If you’re looking for something different to read in the new year, what about my quirky, fantasy series: The Dragon Legacy.

The Dragon Legacy – Book 1 is Fleur’s and Lukas’ adventure to find and save the last dragon egg in the English Lake District.

The Revenge Masquerade – Book 2 is Jasmine and Zane’s romantic adventure in Venice, Italy.

DSCN1091

DSCN0682 ‘She stirred as the first signs of daylight appeared over Helvellyn. Fleur threw back the covers and stretched. The last vestiges of sleep dispelled, she drew back the heavy curtains. Through the mist, near the garden’s boundary where the hills’ wildness began, an outline caught her attention. She vacillated between curiosity and fear. A man moved towards her window. The sunrise lightened the sky. It revealed Xavier’s dark broody face. A rush of adrenaline flooded her body. Her heart rate increased, its beats so loud they disturbed the room’s silence. Her mind was awash with questions, none of which she could answer. He stared at her window. He must recognise her. Startled, she stepped back. A frisson of alarm raced along her spine.’ ©Jane Hunt 2013

‘He reached a solid wooden door carved with intricate Byzantine designs. He howled once loud and prolonged then stepped back from the door poised for flight or fight, whichever came first. The door creaked open and a slight female creature stood in the doorway with an expectant look on her face. He bent his head. She stroked it with cold fingers so long and thin to the point of emaciation they seemed disproportionate to the rest of her body. Zane growled softly in greeting. Nightwalkers often used telepathy, but they wouldn’t open their minds to a stranger. “You’re welcome, wolf. Follow me. The council is ready to meet with you.” She indicated the door at the end of the long wide hallway, bedecked with renaissance treasures all adorned with thick dust and cobwebs.

Zane hesitated. This could be a trap, his wolf insisted. He risked opening his mind, but its tentative search found nothing. Insurmountable mental barriers forced his retreat.’

Winter Wonderland

DSCN9474

The first real snow of winter fell on Boxing Day afternoon. There was lots of it and it certainly made for an enchanted walk with Jazz and Oby this morning.

The trail where we walked was completely covered in deep snow, which Jazz loved.

Oby soon realised playing in the snow was great fun.

Unfortunately many of the lovely trees were bowed down with the weight of the snow, which made it more of an obstacle course than a morning stroll.

The Revenge Masquerade – Jane Hunt – Snippet – #2 The Dragon Legacy

In the spirit of the season here’s a snippet from The Revenge Masquerade my latest release…

Snippet

‘Zane stood motionless. Jasmine stepped into the room, surprised Zane’s protective hands didn’t reach out to stop her. She looked round to make sure the destruction’s instigator wasn’t hiding in plain sight. The room appeared empty except for the body slumped in the middle of the floor. She picked her way over the damaged antique furniture and knelt by the body. She drew a deep breath. She touched an arm visible amid the tangle of threads. The bluish skin was cold and clammy but lacked the stiffness associated with a corpse. She pushed aside the debris covering the body and revealed raven colored hair with turquoise and blue highlights.’
Jasmine

‘Zane Lupus, the wolf shifter who loved and left Jasmine broken-hearted, is in danger. Haunted by nightmares, Jasmine risks her fragile heart and travels to Venice to find her one-time friend and lover, hoping she can save him and rekindle their passion. Abducted by Lorenzo, a passionate dragon, Jasmine is tempted away from her quest to find her wolf.
Zane is confronted with what he suspects is an enemy from his past. He tries in vain to warn the dragon lord, Lukas, about the threat to the infant dragon. The horror beneath The Revenge Masquerade is ancient and terrible and determined to capture the infant dragon for its own ends.
The Dragon Legacy faces its greatest test. Is Jasmine, empowered by the guardian witch’s snake ring, strong enough to restore the natural balance? Or will the sacrifice she must endure destroy her before she embraces her destiny?

The Revenge Masquerade - Excerpt
Open mouthed she stood rooted to the spot. Zane walked towards the palazzo, his animal grace discernible even in human form. Jasmine breathed deeper and fought to master her temper. The calm state she sought proved elusive. How dare he dismiss her as insignificant? She was descended from a dynasty of powerful witches, and the wolf would do well to remember that if he wanted to keep his silver hide intact. His long strides took him to the palazzo’s entrance before she could unleash her verbal assault against his arrogance. Without thinking, she raised her hand in the direction of the beautiful flowers planted in terracotta and colorful earthenware pots. The largest started to shake and then spun until it hovered, gyrating madly several inches from the ground. Zane took a step inside the elegant doorway and Jasmine clenched her fist. The huge pot exploded and crashed to earth. Thousands of sharp shards of pot littered the terrace. Zane stopped and snapped his head round in the direction of the noise. Jasmine noted with satisfaction his expression was a comical mix of surprise and shock, his facial expressions a perfect map of his thoughts. She straightened her shoulders and stared into his angry silvery gaze and waited.
“What are you playing at, Jasmine? This isn’t the time for parlor tricks.” The largest piece of broken pot took flight and swooped over his head, almost slicing through his silver blonde hair. Zane stepped back and sidestepped several times to avoid the ceramic missile. “Fuck, Jasmine! Stop it. We haven’t time for your temper tantrums.” The shard of pot floated to the ground and lay harmlessly among the debris.
“That was a parlor trick wolf. The explosion was to get your attention, which it did.” Zane took a menacing step towards her.
“So what’s so important? My instructions were crystal clear.” Jasmine’s fingers itched. The urge to rearrange that handsome face into something ugly beckoned, but she resisted. Abusing her magic would have far-reaching repercussions. Guardian magic stemmed from nature’s balance; it was intended to maintain the status quo and promote positivity and goodness. Using it for self-gratification would lead to an imbalance, which wouldn’t be tolerated. She would be punished by the loss of her powers until she learnt the important lesson. She buried her hands in her trouser pockets. “That’s just it. You decided. You issued the instructions. I’m capable of making my own choices. I don’t need you to think for me. Or protect me.”
“Perhaps, but you were happy for Lorenzo to act as your protector,” Lukas countered, shooting a hole in her argument.
Jasmine kept her face impassive and made sure her barb reached its target. “Everything comes back to you, doesn’t it, Zane? Since Xavier and the demon snake, I’ve made a study of demons, memorized spells, which will thwart and destroy them. I could help you in there, especially if there’s a demon. You should acknowledge my skills unless you’re threatened by me.” Zane watched her intently but remained silent. It felt good to let go of the resentment she had bottled up since Zane used her and left her. She’d opened Pandora’s Box and didn’t want to close it. Not until Zane appreciated the pain he had inflicted and how she had used it to mature and grow. “Do you want my help or not?”

Author Bio -1
I have enjoyed my first year as a published author. The Dragon Legacy was published in December 2013 and now The Revenge Masquerade, Book 2 in The Dragon Legacy Series is here.
As an only child and animal lover, my imaginary friends were horses. I loved creating adventures for us to enjoy. Now as a writer, my vivid imagination creates romantic, paranormal, mystery and suspense stories with larger than life characters and fantastic scenarios.
I love strong heroines, sexy heroes and scenarios that are not what they seem to be. There is always a strong romantic thread in my writing because I believe in soul mates, love at first sight and happy ever after.
When I’m not writing I enjoy reading, book reviewing, social media and walking in the countryside. I am also passionate about animal welfare. I have been married for over thirty years and have two children, my greatest success. I live on the edge of a country park where I love walking my beloved dogs and dreaming about my next story.
I enjoy talking with my readers and you can contact me via my website: Jane Hunt Writer or on any of my social media sites which are listed below.

 My Review

Dating in the Dark (Sweet Delights Series Book 1)‘Dating in the Dark’ is an intriguing title. The story behind it is full of angst, humour and sexy romance.

Damian is a dynamic hero, with strong reasons for wanting to remain in the shadows. Dating is the last thing on his mind but a serendipitous phone call introduces him to Sophie who woos him with her voice. With plenty of stirring from his lovely sister Vanessa he seems willing to rejoin the dating scene but only on his terms. Damian wants to have his cake and eat it and ‘Dating in the Dark’ is his solution to dating Sophie whilst remaining incognito. Sophie has her own issues but radiates positivity and tenacity. What holds her back are her naivety and tolerance of unacceptable behaviour from her boss.

Vanessa’s sweet delights definitely have cupid qualities. There are some unusual dating scenarios in this story and lots of sweet loving. Cleverly woven into this romantic tale are the current obsession with celebrity and the intrusive behaviour of the tabloid press.

This first tale in the ‘Sweet Delights series’ has all the ingredients for sweet yet spicy romance. I look forward to next batch of sweet delights.

Today is official release day, for book 1 in the Sweet Delights series- Dating in the Dark.

Look out for my review, on my blog later today.:-)

Here’s the lovely Tracey Rogers to share the inspiration behind her fabulous new book.
DatingInTheDark_Medium
Hello Jane and thank you for hosting me today.
When I’m writing it often involves the consumption of calories, as words and food are the perfect combination. Or is that just me? So when I decided to tackle a new project it seemed only right that I should bring words and food together and decorate them with a sprinkle of romance.
Welcome to the Sweet Delights Bakery, where the kitchen gets hot and there’s tastiness aplenty! First to sample the delights of the bakery are Sophie and Damian. Secrets are laced with sugar in Dating in the Dark, book 1 of the Sweet Delights Series.
If you want a peek of what to expect, check my Dating in the Dark board on pinterest here:

Excerpt - 1

Damian rested his arm across his forehead and sighed, trying to blot out the ringing sound and failing. Sleep wasn’t happening. He ached from his walk after pushing it to a run. With each step he’d remembered Sophie’s voice. He had very little else to occupy his mind, so she was an easy focus. Every stride had gathered pace, and before he knew it a walk had become a jog; a jog becoming a run.
And her voice was still inside his head.
Stretching out on the creaky sofa bed, he winced at the movement. Irritated, he tugged the sheet down from his bare chest to lean over and grab the phone. He placed it to his ear and muttered something unintelligible.
“Hi, sorry—did I wake you?”
“Sophie?” Or was he asleep and dreaming?
“Oh, crap. I did, didn’t I? I’m so sorry. I couldn’t sleep, so I thought… Anyway, my apologies. Pretend it never happened, and goodnight,” she said, speeding over her words.
“Sophie, wait!” he called out, wanting to stop her before she hung up, needing to listen to her voice for a little while longer. “I couldn’t sleep either,” he reassured her as he heard her soft breaths. He shuffled higher against his pillow and propped one hand behind his head. Why couldn’t she sleep? Because of him? And how had she gotten his number?
“Really?” Her relieved sigh made him smile. If he wasn’t careful, smiling could become a habit of his. “When you left your number in the box, I thought…”
Left his number? He had no idea what his number was.
“What did you think?”
“I thought you might want me to call?” she asked hesitantly, as if she was worried about his response. She wouldn’t be worried if she could see the stirring going on beneath the sheet. Or maybe she would be? Though she seemed confident, he still detected a shyness behind her words.
“And did you want to call?”
“I did.”
His jaw clenched at her immediate response, a muscle flickering in his cheek. Interesting. Her honesty was evoking things inside that he was starting to like. A lot.
“I like hearing your voice.”
Christ, what was she doing to him?
“What do you look like?” he asked, without thinking about the repercussions of his question.
Silence.
“Does that matter?” she said quietly, the warmth in her tone dropping a degree or two.
“No, no it doesn’t.” He frowned, the admission taking him by surprise. “Tell me what you’re wearing instead.”
“Why?”
“Because if you don’t tell me you’re wearing something hideous, I won’t be sleeping for the rest of the night either.”
She laughed then, the sound not helping his libido whatsoever. “Damian.”
“Yeah.”
“I’m not wearing anything hideous.” He groaned then, obviously out loud because Sophie was laughing again. “I’m not wearing anything.”
Oh, hell. A sudden spike of desire sliced through his veins, making him regret his impulsive words. “Then I’m now very grateful I don’t know what you look like.”
“You could. Know what I look like I mean.”
“You want to tell me now?”
“No. I want to show you. On a…date?”
Damian lifted a hand to his face, massaging his fingers above his brow, then lower to scrub over his jaw. His breath felt restricted by his tightening lungs. As much as he wanted to see her, to touch her, to have someone touch him in a way that wasn’t clinical or trying to fix him—he couldn’t do it. How could he see her, without her seeing him?
Author Bio -1Author picUsually found with a pen in my hand, or my head in a book, I’m a contemporary romance author who also thinks fangs and wings are a very attractive accessory.
A devourer of books from an early age, imagination was my best discovery. I spent much of my childhood stepping into wardrobes, searching for that magical snowy world where conversing with animals would be expected. When I wasn’t searching for those worlds, I wrote about them instead. My first step into the world of romance was when I stole sneak peeks into my nana’s books. I’m still in that world and I refuse to leave.
I live in Staffordshire, UK, with my husband and three wonderful children. An avid reader and writer of romance, I strongly believe that words make the world go around. I like nothing more than to be swept away by the words on a page. I hope I can sweep you away too.
