4* Review: Voice of an Angel – Becky Lower

21902471

Max Bainbridge is an ace newspaper reporter who gets all the biggest assignments, most recently covering the fighting in Afghanistan. When he is shot on the battlefields, he is operated on and then flown home. The nurse responsible for his subsequent care is Evelyn Hammer, a 35-year-old woman who ran for her life, and from the musical spotlight, when she was 17 and on the cusp of fame. Her new identity has been in place, and impenetrable, ever since. Over the years, she’s found singing is a more soothing way to wake people from surgery, and they are usually so foggy they don’t realize she’s been singing to them. Until Max, that is.

Evelyn knows she’s breaking one of the cardinal rules of nursing by dating a patient, but she can’t resist Max. What begins as an innocent affair with a definite expiration date when Max leaves for his next assignment becomes a real threat to unmasking Evelyn’s hidden identity. Max can’t control his journalism instincts as one clue after another emerges and he realizes he doesn’t know the person he’s fallen in love with.

Only by uncovering Evelyn’s secret past can they move forward with their future. But her past is still there, and threatening. Some secrets are better left alone.

Voice Of An AngelMy Review

Voice of an Angel is a lovely, romantic story full of mystery and sensuality. Evelyn is a dedicated nurse with a mysterious, tragic past. Max a war correspondent thinks he must be dreaming when he wakes up in hospital, to the sound of a singing. The attraction and deepening of Evelyn’s and Max’s relationship is plausible and sensitively written. Both Evelyn and Max have been damaged by their past life experiences. They have to learn to trust again before they have a chance of happy ever after.

Evelyn is hiding from her past which makes her personal life lonely. Max gets under her barriers because she believes he is just passing through. Safe in that knowledge, she enjoys the chemistry between them while it lasts. Max has a strong, forceful personality. When injury prevents him from pursuing his dangerous career he focuses on Evelyn, determined that they will be lovers and that she will reveal the secrets of her past.

This story has gentle pacing and an interesting plot with a few surprises. A well written ending provides a satisfying conclusion to Evelyn’s and Max’s love story. I read this over a few nights and picked up the story again easily because the characters are memorable.

If you enjoy romantic stories with an enticing mixture of angst and hope.’Voice of Angel’ is worth reading.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

He lives by two simple rules: No emotional entanglements and duty must remain his first priority. His beliefs are challenged when he’s inexplicably drawn to Fleur, a human woman with an unusual psychic aura. Sparks of sexual attraction ignite threatening both his search for the dragon’s egg he buried a thousand years ago and Fleur’s life. Under the cover of a murder mystery weekend an apocalyptic hunt begins’

The Dragon Legacy – Excerpt

‘ “Who upset you? Xavier?” Lukas’ fury reddened his face and neck.

“Yes.” The dragon towered above her. His hot breath seared her cold cheek. Her tentative fingers touched the spot. His face wore a hard-set expression. His lack of control unnerved Fleur. Heightened passion narrowed and darkened his eyes. She watched mesmerized as their color changed from green to gold, no longer human. The golden beast ruled here. Her gaze dropped to his mouth. She expected flames. Fleur shivered with awareness as she listed the dangers of a liaison with him. She ignored her common sense. Whatever the risks, she would surrender to his heat and passion.’

What Makes A Great Summer Read?

DSCN1117

So after Saturday’s rain  the summer sun has returned and with it my happy optimistic mood. If  you read my last post  you will recall I was feeling down and attributed it to the grey day.

DSCN1106

Taking advantage of the sunshine I spent a couple of hours tidying and enjoying my garden with these  lovely butterflies  who decided to join me. I love gardening because it gives me time to think and plan and this post is a result of yesterday’s gardening interlude.

DSCN0824 DSCN0947 DSCN1055 DSCN1076

Lots of people will be off on holiday in the next few weeks and many will be searching for  a good book to enjoy whilst they’re relaxing on the beach or sitting by the pool.

DSCN1077

Even if you’re not going away to the coast or countryside, if the sun stays out the excuse to sit in the garden with a good book is too much to resist.

DSCN1139   DSCN1137

The point of going on holiday is to relax and most of all escape from your normal daily routine. Having a little ‘me’ time recharges our emotional and physical batteries before returning to our often stressful lives.

DSCN1141

So a summer read must offer escapism. Many novels today mirror reality or focus on the worst bits of everyday life, I would avoid these when looking for my holiday read. That doesn’t mean the story has to be sugary sweet just hopeful. Or so far removed from reality that even if it focuses on the darker side of human nature the reader knows that anything is possible including a happy outcome. 🙂

DSCN0763 DSCN0783 Continuing the escapism theme, the setting of a summer read is important. It needs to be in a place the reader would like to explore, so coastal locations are good as are mountains and picturesque countryside. I enjoy reading stories set in the summer too but I don’t think this matters as long as the setting is escape worthy.

DSCN0952

If you’re on a crowded beach then its easy to be distracted. So the ideal read must have an absorbing plot with lots of twists. Vivid characters are essential they need to make an impression. The genre of the story is subjective but I love a story with mystery ,lots of  action and sizzling romance. The romance doesn’t necessarily have to be the focus of the story but  a little spice always adds to the enjoyment. 😉

So that’s my recipe for the perfect summer read.

The Dragon Legacy Series
The Dragon Legacy Series

I leave you with some snippets from The Dragon Legacy maybe it could be your perfect summer read?

You can read the first page of The Dragon Legacy on BooksGoSocial

 Let’s You Escape:

‘The elusive turquoise-scaled dragons appeared through the haze. Their minds united by a single aim: the dragon egg’s safety, the reason they risked exposure to the human world.’

 Fabulous Setting:

‘The dragon lord’s golden eyes focused on the grey sky above the rock strewn hills. Dawn mist hovered around the summit like a silken web. It drifted through the rocky outcrops until it reached the valley where he stood alone.’

‘Mists floated across Lake Ullswater and cloaked the twisty lanes in an impenetrable shroud.’

Absorbing Plot:

‘Demon slayer Lukas Draco is a loner.

Vivid Characters:

‘Fleur stole a sideways glance at Lukas…His face was the epitome of masculine beauty, characterized by well-defined angular cheekbones, covered with pale, almost translucent skin. Its apparent delicacy did not detract from his masculinity; he looked like a fallen angel.’

‘Xavier Serpente clenched his manicured nails into his expensive Italian silk trousers… The threat of danger, which simmered under the surface of his urbane respectability, was his greatest attraction.’

Mystery:

‘Lukas forced his mind back to his mission. He studied his murder mystery character profile. His fellow participants mustn’t find out his identity. Or the real reason for his presence at Hallows House.

Action:

‘Escape impossible, the furious dragon man slammed him against the tree trunk. His bones cracked. The onslaught repeated with greater force, and his head and neck rocked on his shoulders.’

Sizzling Romance:

‘Lukas caught hold of her hand as she turned away from him. “No, don’t! I like you this way.” He ran the pad of his thumb along her responsive lips. “Trust me. Everyone will like you as you are.” She looked vivacious, like the color of her dress, with lush, pink lips and hair like golden rain as it slipped from its elegant restraints. He wanted her back in his arms. His arousal rocketed several degrees as the tip of Fleur’s tongue darted out and tasted his thumb. “Hell!” Another few seconds and leaving wouldn’t be an option.’

Book Reviews – How Important Are They?

DSCN1102 (2)So typically  as the holiday season starts in the UK there were thunderstorms and rain last night and when I woke up this morning it was still raining. I don’t know about you but when the weather is grey and miserable my mood mirrors it, even if I have nothing to be unhappy about. Yet when its sunny I am happy and the day has never-ending possibilities. Is this just me or are you like this too?

DSCN1097

Anyway  onto the real subject of this post, book reviews and how important are they?

I come to this debate from two viewpoints; I am an avid reader and book reviewer and a new author who knows how difficult it is to get reviews for my own book but does this matter? It’s still selling with the small number of reviews I have but I can’t help but think it would sell so much better if it had more reviews on Amazon , Amazon UK  and Goodreads but is this really the case? 🙂

DSCN1091

Yet as a reader and book reviewer I rarely read  other people’s reviews before I read a book. I rely on personal recommendations from my writer friends or the book blurb. Many of the books I read and review are sent to me by the author or through NetGalley as these are often advanced reader copies (ARC) I rely entirely on the book blurb to pick my next read.

Do you read the reviews before you buy a book or  is it the cover and book blurb that make you take the plunge?

My book reviews are popular because they are quotable. Snippets can be included on Twitter, Facebook and Google +, which help draw attention to the book that is being marketed.  Book reviews are now important marketing tools.  If they are positive they assist book promotion  and help authors and publishers judge the popularity of different story brands.

Leave a comment below to let me know what you think. 🙂

5* Review: High Heels & Bicycle Wheels – Jane Linfoot

Today is release day for the latest romance from  Jane Linfoot – ‘High Heels & Bicycle Wheels’ from Harper Impulse.

98764-6 High Heels and Bicycle Wheels

Meet Bryony: She’s a fun-loving, very single TV production assistant whose idea of sport is the Jimmy Choo sales scrum
Meet Jackson: Cycling’s bad boy superstar. Injured and out of racing this summer, without his training he’s looking for another distraction.
Bryony’s facing a triple whammy – her last single friend just named the day, her mother’s offering to have her eggs frozen, and the guy she’s loved from afar, forever, just got hitched. So she’s more than happy to accept the offer of a totally out of character but seriously steamy one night of no-strings fun. Especially when the guy in question is so attractive he even looks good in Lycra!
Jackson’s on the look out for a new career but if the opportunity to work on TV means a fortnight with the most uptight woman in the world, he’d rather not bother. He never goes in for seconds – and who in their right mind would head off in a camper van with a woman who irons her knickers?
Add in a tandem (yes, a tandem) and fast forward to double trouble for a summer neither of them will ever forget!

My Review

‘High Heels and Bicycle Wheels’ is a must read for all sexy romance addicts.
If you read Jane Linfoot’s last novel you will recognise Bryony Marshall. She is the sister of Brando the hero of ‘The Right Side of Mr Wrong’. Bryony, a production assistant meets the celebrity guest of her latest show in a most revealing way. Jackson a sexy cyclist, super stud proves hard for the feisty heroine to ignore despite her controlling nature and hard-won independence. The chemistry between the two is rapid and leads to the first of many sensuous encounters in a novel that is teeming with sensuality.

I love the realistic touches of humour. Bryony and Jackson’s often painful soul-searching reveals their complexities and vulnerabilities. This insight into their psyche makes them likeable even when they behave badly. The story’s originality is refreshing, as is the whistle-stop tour of England’s coast and countryside, making this a great holiday read.

If you like your love scenes prolific and fiery and enjoy a nail-biting, romantic ending ‘High Heels and Bicycles’ is for you.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

3619536About the Author  – Jane Linfoot

I’m Jane Linfoot, and I write fun, flirty fiction, with feisty heroines and a bit of an edge.
I live in a mountain kingdom in Derbyshire, England, where my family and pets are kind enough to ignore the domestic chaos – happily, we’re in walking distance of a supermarket. For me, writing romance is cool because I get to wear pretty shoes instead of wellies. I love hearts, flowers, happy endings, all things vintage, most things french. When I’m not on Facebook, and can’t find an excuse for shopping, I’ll be walking, or gardening. On days when I want to be really scared, I ride a tandem.

5* Review: Extra Time – Michelle Betham – Striker Series#2

10337545

The game continues…

The second book in Michelle Betham’s seductively wicked bonkbuster.

Delving into the lives of those who live and work within the so-called Beautiful Game, ‘Extra Time’ is a story of sex, secrets and the true cost of fame.

Footballer’s Wives meets Jackie Collins in this sizzling scorcher of a summer read!

My Review

‘Extra Time’ the second book in the Striker trilogy is a fabulous, heartbreaking, sexy read about the players in the beautiful game and those who surround them.

Amber and Jim, newly married appear idyllically happily but Jim is still keeping secrets from his new wife which is bound to have consequences. Ryan newly recovered from rehab can’t forget Amber even though she has moved on and then there’s Ronnie, Amber’s best friend who is more than willing to offer his beautiful friend his undivided attention.
Amber’s life becomes an emotional battlefield, which leads to lots of sexy encounters and plenty of angst. ‘Extra Time’ is well paced and the characters are so vibrant, it’s difficult to put down. I couldn’t wait to see what Amber would do next. There are further insights in to Jim’s mysterious character but he remains an enigma. Revelations about his past life leave some interesting clues for what is to come next. Ryan’s character develops in a satisfying way as he attempts to avoid a repeat of his previous disastrous behaviour and starts to realise what he really wants from life. There is also an interesting new character who threatens the status quo. Great supporting characters and some interesting football details give this story its authenticity. I look forward to ‘Final Score’ the last book in the trilogy.

The Dragon Legacy – The Players

Fleur and Lukas The Dragon Legacy

Fleur and Lukas

The Dragon Legacy

The Dragon Legacy is the first in  a series of  fantasy/paranormal romance books about  supernatural dragons who  protect the natural balance of the world.  We meet Lukas Draco, the dragon lord in the first book. The leader of the ancient order of dragons Lukas’ mission is to find and protect the last dragon egg from  evil in the form of the demon, Xavier.  At a quintessentially English Murder Mystery weekend Lukas meets shy, naive Fleur Curwen. The attraction  between them is instant and powerful and makes him question his way of life.

Fleur

Under the cover of a murder mystery weekend an apocalyptic hunt begins’

Xavier

‘Xavier Serpente clenched his manicured nails into his expensive Italian silk trousers, amazed Jasmine dare leave him in mid-conversation. She didn’t realize his importance. He mentally ticked off his attributes. Successful Milanese financier and good looks guaranteed him the undivided attention of most beautiful women. He also possessed the fast car, city penthouse, and lakeside retreat associated with his ilk. The threat of danger, which simmered under the surface of his urbane respectability, was his greatest attraction. All women acquiesced when they fell under the spell of his midnight black gaze. Except Jasmine; she intrigued him. Her potent aura represented a source of usable power. Fleur’s importance to her troubled him. Xavier let his gaze roam over the slender blonde-haired woman across the room. The innocent, vulnerable aura she projected didn’t fascinate his jaded palate.’

4* Review: Scorched – Erica Hayes

21976885

In a world where everyone wears a mask, you can’t trust anyone… not even yourself.

Verity Fortune was once Sapphire City’s top crime-fighter, wielding her powers of telekinesis to battle the city’s most despicable villains. Now, she’s consumed by a single burning desire: revenge. Against those who took away her mask, her memory, and nearly her life.

Having escaped from the asylum they left her to rot in, Verity dons her mask once again and becomes the Seeker, a vigilante warrior for truth.

But when she unwittingly uncovers an evil conspiracy deep within her own family, she’s suddenly on the run, alone and hunted by those she thought were on her side…

ScorchedMy Review

‘Scorched’ is the perfect read if you love superheroes battling against a dystopian society. Told from the first person point of view it doesn’t shy away from the graphic violence which characterises this type of urban fantasy.

Verity Fortune battles against the darker elements of society with her supernatural family, hiding their true identities behind the glamour and glitz of a corporate family. Haunted by the cataclysmic events which led to tragic loss and torture, Verity fight backs against the elements which she believes have violated her.

The cleverly twisted plot obscures the truth. There are some obvious twists which the reader can guess but these hide the deeper story which is surprising and sows the seeds for the adventures to come.

The romance in ‘Scorched’ is not immediately obvious but as the story develops you realise that all Verity’s actions are a consequence of her love. Well written dialogue, atmospheric settings and vivid action make this a gripping read. I look forward to the next in the series.

I received a copy of this book from Harper Impulse via NetGalley.

The Perfect Holiday Cottage

Back garden view of our retreat in Northumberlan
Back garden view of our retreat in Northumberland

If you have been following my blog posts this week you will know I visited Northumberland. Now that I am back home again I want to share some thoughts and photographs of the lovely holiday cottage which was the base for our Northumberland holiday. Intended purely for couples and their dogs it was small but well designed with everything we needed for our stay.

Even though this cottage is close to the A1 and easy to get to, it is so quiet and secluded. The perfect place to get away from it all with a ring side seat  of all the wildlife. There were hares, rabbits, pheasants and at night time, bats easily seen from the garden and lots of wild song birds. We even had a visit from an Arctic Tern looking for breakfast.

I would love to wake up to this view every morning.
