Sunday Snippet – The Revenge Masquerade

Odd behaviour for a dog even a supernatural one was her last rational thought as the violent pain blurred the line between reality and fantasy and pushed her over the edge into nothingness…

Where was she? The expensively furnished room looked vaguely familiar but Jasmine didn’t know why. The thump and echo of beating drums filled her senses and made her head hurt. She couldn’t concentrate but there was no clue to the source of her discomfort. A sudden movement in her peripheral vision drew her gaze, the noise and pain faded as the scene unfolded and absorbed her.

A woman she recognised leaned against a large table and stared at the stranger opposite; a tall dark haired woman lithe and expensively dressed in a white silk creation. The stranger took a step forward an obvious invasion of the first woman’s personal space. Jasmine noted the aggressive gesture and raised voices. White silk woman spoke in a heavily accented voice her speech difficult to decipher. The other voice lighter was Larna’s, the room’s familiarity fell into place.

“I can’t help you I don’t know where the dragon lord is.”Larna rigid body belied her slightly bored tone.

The stranger backed away and vanished. Jasmine blinked and scanned the immediate area for any trace of the woman. Nothing, in her place swayed a snake like creature. Her assumption that white silk woman transformed into the serpent the only logical explanation. Jasmine’s sharp nails pinched her bare arm ‘ouch’ the nail marks visible against her pale skin but the snake remained this nightmare was real.

The creature spat venom at Larna poised to strike at the diminutive woman. She drew a sword and struck out at the monster. Unaffected it coiled round Larna’s upper body and pinned her up against the wall. Venom like droplets dripped from its open mouth onto her face and mouth as she struggled against the snake’s hold. The death like grip relaxed. Larna jerked like a marionette .The snake disappeared.

The dark haired woman raised her hand. Larna’s jerky steps propelled her towards the centre of the vast room. The woman lowered her hand. Larna hit the floor hard like a discarded puppet devoid of human reactions. Satisfied the woman slashed the air with random hand movements and the furniture and ornaments collided and smashed before crashing to the ground damaged like Larna… The images receded and only darkness remained…

The pain melted away too tired to think Jasmine drifted into unconsciousness.’
